As long as it's an old model like the one in the top gear show, I've heard the new one's are more for D4 mammy's doing the school run these days which I think is a problem with just about any modern 4x4. I'd avoid any new SUV and go for the simple reliable old ones, top gear has shown time and time again they're all show, it almost seems like the older the better with SUV's.

The hilux they drove to the North Pole and James May drove to the volcano was modified but it clearly was a beast of a machine. No mammys in their Q4s there.

That goes with all cars. The older the better. If you had a new VW Golf for example, it would be very difficult to fix yourself. With all the electronics and crap they pack into them now-a-days

Any good old diesel jeep is what you need. :)

It was fairly heavily modified in fairness and also suffers greatly from being so modified. For the same reasons swiftblade mentions that vehicle would be useless. It's so customised you wont get parts for it not that a lay person would be able to repair such a vehicle anyway. Even having the electronic equipment wont help as many manufacturers have custom diagnostic machines.

i think on of these with a cage around the cab would do nicely no parts to go wrong and easily repaired http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/tractors/1578094

also it has the in built zombie disposal unit

also it runs on any type of diesel / veg oil it can get (since the engine is so primitive )

I bought my Landcruiser specifically with Zombie Apocalypse in mind. reasons:
    1. Primitive but powerful diesel engine, able to take all sorts of crappy salvaged fuel and also withstand Electro Magnetic Pulse from inevitable nuclear blast ( Sellafield or military trying to stop virus)
    2. automatic transmission. no fumbling for gears while zombie gets closer and closer in side view
    3. permanent 4x4 so no getting stuck and spinning wheels aimlessly while zombie punches through side window
    4. 90 litre diesel tank for Mad Max style, continent crossing fuel usage
    5. large centre console for machete / sawn off shotgun.
    6. 1997 year of manufacture: lots of parts in scrap yards and cheap to buy.
    7. 8 seats in total to collect survivors which you can then leave behind to slow down zombies. think human shield.
    8. legendary toyota reliability so no churning engine starter while, once again, zombie shuffles ever closer,

Drawbacks though are too many windows and side steps and roof rack combo gives zombies too much to hold onto. I reckon having Riot Van style mesh should make up for that though.

Gas will run out, roads will be cluttered. I would just go on a bicycle. It can get through pretty much any area. I can be easily carried if necessary, and it will help you keep in shape.

I don't think the roads outside of the major Irish cities will be clogged. Most towns have at least 5 or 6 ways into them, there's literally thousands of little roads around the country all going to the same place. Locals will be able to use these to keep congestion off the road.
