Great new album out from them called "hither thither", such variety on it, it's like about 5 different bands played on it.......so I am surprised that you all you cool in-the-know peeps haven't been singing the praises of this great new Irish band?

But there is an O Emperor thread.

    You just started it. :)

I've liked what I've heard of them so far alright and I'm planning on picking their album up this weekend.

What are they like live? Any reports?

Saw them in Galway, and very good they were.

saw them at EP and at the launch of the Grand Social the other night - very impressed both times by the musicianship and the songs. Seem like good lads too. Its just not quite my thing though, maybe a little bit on the retro side for me much of the time. One of those bands I'd happily listen to but wouldn't rush out to buy their album.

I hope they do well though. Its funny though, with their style, I always thought that it was a strange signing for a major label. It's both confusing and encouraging for me because I worry that their sound won't be very commercial for the younger folk especially.

In that respect, given major labels focus on 'sure things' with the state of the industry etc, its confusing to me.

But in another respect, its brilliant to see major labels taking on something that genuinely has a bit of depth and musicality to it.

    Good luck to them.

I know the lads since we were teens and this album is the sum of a lot of music that's gone before.

I was a little worried when I bought their EP a few months ago as I wasn't sure if they had their own sound or something. Hard to put my finger on what I thought. But I have to say I'm very, very impressed by Hither Thither. I bought it when it came out and have been listening to it a lot since. Great variety, superb musicianship. I have a particularly soft spot for their harmonies as I sang with the majority of them in a few different choirs over the years.

It's an excellent debut album. It's gone in at number 6 in the Irish album chart. I don't know what kind of measure of success that is but it's better than a kick in the teeth I suppose. Very positive reviews anywhere I've read too so hopefully they can push on and get more publicity. I'm sure they'll have to look across the water soon enough.

Anyone see them live? Great band but they take AGES to do their sound check and get sorted. Now I mean ages.

I would have to agree on that one, although Built To Spill were ridiculously prolonged setting up when I went to see them, as were Dinosaur Jr.

O Emperor have been short-listed for the Choice Music Prize, 6-1 on paddy power to win it! Best of luck to them, they have an excellent chance of winning.

Yeah it's a superb achievement. Was at their gig in The Forum in Waterford on December 28th and they were just unreal. Just announced a full brass and strings gig down here in April which will be interesting.

Been listening to this album a lot since I got it, and it's not totally blowing me away. It's good, a lot better than a lot of Irish bands, but I think I should stop reading the music press, as the seem to hype the bejaysus out of everything so I end up expecting too much, I end up expecting to be floored.....:confused:

Heard a few songs over the last few months on tv ie.. Other Voices and Ceoil ar An Imeall. Ending up getting the album last week. I have to say why didn't I get into them sooner. Really really good. Pity I have a match the day after they play Cork.

there are actualy some fantastic bands down in waterford. o emperor were one of the few who had the ambition/money/drive to go past the bridge :)

i thought at first that they were trying to be a bit too mature and retro (for lack of a better word), but no. they are fantastic and thats all there really is it to it :) don quixote has been stuck in my head for weeks now

Could anyone give me the guitar chords for any O Emperor song (don't mind me espically).?

Don't Mind Me is tricky enough, I think it's in drop D but I'm not 100% sure. The chorus is essentially D and G though, so that bit should be no problem.

Taloned Air is C#m and B for the "verse" and the "bridge/chorus" is A and C#m.

Sedalia is something like E / D / C/ Am / D7 / Am / D7. There are a few augmentations, you can probably work them out to suit yourself.

Their debut was nothing special but their new single is kind of cool, sounds a bit like Elliott Smith gone psychedelic. Hopefully the new album will be an improvement.

I wasn't the only one that picked up on the Elliott Smith resemblance then. Have to say I enjoyed the debut, and the gigs, the few times I've seen them live.

Can't seem to find a thread about Waterford band, O Emperor's new album, Vitreous, which was released over the weekend. I do think they're one of Ireland's lesser appreciated gems and the new album is every bit as good as their debut, Hither Thither, which was released in late-2010.

They have a great sound; I'd describe them as having a sort of Beatles-Pink Floyd-Radiohead sound and their live shows are incredible.

I think the Vitreous is very much in the same vein as their first album. It has a similar sound throughout but it equally showcases their versatility and desire to experiment with some newer edgier stuff.

Holy Fool, Contact and This Is It would be the tracks that stand out for me. I'd recommend trying to catch one of their live shows over the coming months.

Would a new thread for the new album not be more appropriate than moving it to the "why no O Emperor thread?" thread, no?

holy fool is one of the best singles i've heard in ages...
