    Nightfall: All Hallows

A simple live-fire training exercise - get in, arrest the terrorist leader, photograph and blow the ammo dump, and get out. But why was the operation planning hurried through, what's so important about this weekend? What's with the weird science locator gizmos we were given to field-test, and why did the research corporation have to send their own mercs to keep an eye on them? What are those inhuman shapes moving about in the darkness, and who's really pulling our strings?

There's moonlight enough to operate by, but for a combined team of military operatives this will be the darkest night of their lives.

HRTA airsoft, Saturday 30th October, assemble at 1900 and be prepared to be out until 0100.

Real-capacity ammunition load-outs for everyone - that means non-winding mags (no high-caps, in other words) containing as many BBs as the real version carries, plus 4 followers for AEGs.

Military team: Military uniforms and load-outs. Digital camera if possible. Bandage for first field dressing and ribbon for gun repair.
    Monster team: Monster costumes! Guns.

The military team will follow the triage system for hits and injuries, and the self-service system for gun hits. This is advanced milsim rules.

The monster team will follow supernatural rules, and will each have their own special ability. Please contact the organisers ahead of time to let us know what your monster costume will be so we can come up with suitable ability rules. Snarling, howling and scary behaviour appreciated.

This is a night game so come prepared. It's capped at 40 players, so click here to pre-register! No-show slots will be awarded on a first come first served basis.

Yes they do. Good point, I should be more explicit about that. Nothing particularly fruity going on here, the monster team will be just playing airsoft with multiple objectives and all that, just with a flavoursome twist.

Nah, it's more to get a rough idea of numbers. I don't know if changing can be done by the signee but if not, just drop me a line and I can do it.

Nothing solid but there's definitely been enough interest that it's going ahead, and it can only get even better. See you there!

Yes we are! I'm working on sorting out props and the acting crew, and putting the final touches on the rules. It's going to be fun.

Putting the finishing touches on the story for this one, and sorted out props today.

Playable groups will be monsters, the military unit, private security contractors, and the military unit's OpFor training group. We'll see who unravels the mystery, and survives the night.

Fun night (in my opinion), there were a few hitches mostly centring around people not considering a monster attack to be an event worthy of note, but it we got through the plot anyway. For those who didn't get the full picture, here's what was up.

A special ops training mission against the house OpFor - infiltrate the village, nab the leader, blow the ammo dump. This mission is also being used by Craftian Technologies to test their prototype GPS-beater, ultimately intended to be miniaturised and ruggedised and issued to everyone, but for this early stage in the development procedure instead being unwieldy silver boxes emitting an eerie glow. To assist in this, a team of security contractors working for Craftian Technologies are accompanying the military unit to oversee the field testing.

Craftian Technologies are, of course, meddling with ancient evil from beyond the void, and their figures show that, if deployed at Hallowe'en when the veil is thinnest, their devices might just open up a portal to monsterville, very handy for bio-weapons and supersoldier research. They consider the military team utterly expendable. Sure enough, as the unit gets close to their objective, the devices open the portal (appearing as a bonfire), and monsters come out and rip up the OpFor, with only one badly-wounded survivor hiding in a building.

Once the ops room knows things aren't going to the training mission plan, they order the unit to snap photos of the assailants, find out where they're coming from, photograph that, and so on. The security contractors however have orders only to be opened in the event of unexplained phenomena. These tell them to capture monsters using the enclosed syringe and dump them in a pre-designated building for collection by a research team. They're also to protect the prototype devices, and don't let the military do anything that might interfere with profitable opportunities.

Eventually a Craftian Technologies scientist who's grown a conscience decides that he won't let these guys be used as pawns, and makes his way to the field (this was me in a brief panicky in-character appearance). He tells the military unit (in this case the commander was the only person I found) that they're being used, that the only way to seal the rift is to dump all four boxes into it simultaneously (it was going to be with an explosive, but we didn't have any pyro after all). Also, if they could find the corpse of the OpFor officer and get his orders, they could prove the military was in on the set-up too.

The monsters wanted to harvest eyeballs, drag soldiers back to their other dimension, get the boxes so they can easily get back and forth to our realm, and disable the vehicles so their dinner can't drive away. Liam the sock-monster was very strong and could do a one-man simulated carry, Gerrowadat was the Invisible Man and could put on a high-vis vest to become invisible (he happened by when the scientist was explaining about destroying the rift, so he was well-clued-in on not letting that happen), and Tad the vampire had cards he could give to downed mortals which would give them a speedy respawn time for an hour, but thereafter turn them to the monster team (this happened to two of them, including Dicey the medic).

Ultimately, the monsters got 8 victory points to the military's 6. Three boxes remained in play, two in monster control, so they're pretty happy about that because now they can come and go more easily. The military got a vehicle up so they could make their escape. Moggser was almost at the dumping ground with a serum-filled monster for the researchers when the final whistle went, but 'almost' doesn't make it.

Well played, people! HRTA is a great site for night games. I'm bursting to get behind the trigger myself for one.
