The penny finally drops. Unfortunately, it drops from the Empire State building.

Wow, so if you like, take an already crummy job, with sh*t hours, bad conditions, and no job security, and then you RIP AWAY THE TRAINING SUPPORTS, ILLEGALLY REFUSE TO PAY PEOPLE FOR HOURS WORKED AND MAKE THE WHOLE DAMN JOB SO EXPENSIVE TO DO THAT IT'S ALMOST NOT WORTH IT, people actually might leave? Who'd have thought that?

It's not going to get better any time soon.

Yes it's dreadful. Pretty much the same in every other profession though...

There should be some degree of service commitment from them

Oooo they wouldn't want to go down that road

Presumably the service commitment would involve a stint at a peripheral hospital which for some unknown reason can't attract NCHDs.

Yes, service commitment will fix everything. EVERY graduate must be made to resent the Irish medical system, not just the ones who stay. All according to the grand design - MWAH HA HA! :pac:

Well I reckon a service commitment is the one thing that would actually make NCHD's grow a pair, overthrow the IMO and actually protest until they had decent working conditions.

Heard anecdotally that Beaumont had 1 applicant for 8 positions in AE and took another job anyway.

Also did you see there is an NCHD in anaesthetics in Drogheda who cannot do on-call because his English is so bad

GP's co-op's dropping like flies as well both NEDOC and Westdoc have plans to cease operations from 31st of Dec due to cutbacks.

I'm sure there will be no shortage of immigrant doctors coming fro the third world who will jump at these posts, all while the govt. can save by not spending to train Irish people to do the jobs.

If this isn't tongue in cheek...sweet merciful Jesus.

In a letter in this week’s Irish Medical Times (page 20), CUH emergency medicine consultant Dr Chris Luke called for a ‘medical indenture’, where young doctors would be obliged to work in unpopular locations — such as EDs — for a fixed term, in return for their training or professional contracts.

Thar be a storm coming methinks.

how much of this is due to RCS England not treating the RCSI/RCPI qualifications with parity? kinda limits grads to staying here long term instead of letting them go abroad and coming back later. the alternative is to go abroad, and stay abroad.

That's certainly one of many factors.

Structured career progression (or the lack thereof), excessive workload, pay issues, exam issues, support structures etc etc etc ad nauseam.

The negative attitudes to NCHD's are exemplified by Chris Luke's patronising letter and follow up comments.

If (for example) you had an overly expensive/inefficient system where there was a lot of waste and care bordering on 3rd world that as a country you could not afford any more, how would you go about wiping the slate completely clean (ie. close down hospitals and streamline departments) in the face of unionism?

Its the bigger hospitals that are going to be affected more ironically, as many of the smaller hospitals have long term NCHDs - very concerning stuff in the pipeline-
