Hi, I'm a student & I've got to do a project on a point of law I'd like to see changed. I decided to study up on why a catholic can't marry a divorced person in Catholic church, & why the church wont recognise the marriage if it does take place somewhere else. I don't know where to start to get good info on this subject???? Any help gratefully appreciated!!!

Your local priest would be a good place to start

surely this isn't a law as such, just a rule in the catholic church?

It may be canon (sp) law but to be legally married in Ireland you have to sign a register which is why if you're married in a church you are taken aside for a few minutes to sign the legal documents. Afaik!

Yep this is catholic church law, not actual law.
They can have a civil wedding.

Yes as above it is not law, just a church rule. If you want to look at marriage as an avenue look at civil partnerships versus mariage maybe. A lot more coverage there and very current issue.
