TV or internet dilemma

I'm moving into a new house on Saturday and have to get the usual stuff sorted out (gas, electricity, etc....). However, the house comes with Sky digital. Now my question is do other Boardsies think it would be worth getting rid of the tv and just getting high speed internet instead (as we are in the UK, we can stream live tv) or should I keep the tv and get basic internet?

Simple, which do you value the most?

My view is Freeview: never subscribe to anything if you don't have to, especially something owned by Rupert Murdoch.

    Hmmm

When he said "get rid of TV" I thought he meant the actual set....

I think I'd even take dial up internet over television.

I'm also in UK and faced the same problem. Only you - and your family ,if any - , can decide what is best for you and what you can afford to pay BUT IMHO Sky is worth having though expensive if you have to pay extra for sports channels etc. The quality is much better than even on fastest Internet Broadband.

My own choice though was Virgin Media Cable TV (as I live in an area covered by Virgin) as its fastest broadband is officially 50 mb - thus much much faster than anything else and much quicker to download programmes from Internet).

In UK it is also possible to pay extra for a channel such as PREMIUM SPORTS if youy are a GAA fan.Alternatively if you use an Irish Proxy Server or VPN then possible to get all of the Irish channels for an additional fee. Lots opf choice and alas most of it very expensive save for the "basic channels" and the digital ones included with say Freeview or Freesat.

At the end of teh day though only YOU can decide what is best for YOU.... Good Luck

I've got SKY and have a little mobile broadband dongle that does the job, not sure if I would be able to pick between them though. If I did have to choose I would pick the high speed internet that way you get both TV and internet.

Nah it's just the Sky digital I'm thinking of getting rid of. I have a tv which I'll be using for my PS3 and hooking my laptop up to it. Does anybody know if there is Freeview in the UK?

I've got an internet dongle with O2 and its brilliant. I've got a 15gig download limit on it and I usually don't come near that! I use it for downloading movies and streaming TV. As a result of this on my days off I spend my time in bed watching my laptop....O2 internet is the way to go....19.99 a month! *LOVE*

Defiantly not my friend. I have a PS3 which streams from the Internet and my file server onto my big TV. Quality is very good.

I made a decision 4 months ago to get rid of cable TV and I have not regretted it one bit. The Internet is the way to go to save Euros and Dollars.

I'm saving $100 a month by cutting cable and I don't miss a thing. As I said above, I used my PS3 for watching movies / online TV. I don't miss the advertisements. Anyone who has been to the states knows what TV is like for Advertisements. It would wreck your head.

All in all, no regrets at all for getting rid of cable. The Internet as it all....

If you have XBOX live or a ps3 then go with internet, otherwise net because sitting at a computer for hours really is nowhere near as comfortable as sitting on a sofa surfing sky, especially if you have sky +

Id chose sky once its sky+ HD and get a standard internet connection.

Depends on how basic really. Could you still do everything you want with the basic connection? Internet is much more useful than TV, but if you can get TV and a decent internet connection at all then that would be best IMO.

Only reason I would get SKY and why I'm thinking of doing it is for the sports, I watch Snooker, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, Darts, Soccer and a bit more Golf, it's not the same online and I like to watch it live.

Other than that you can watch everything else online.
