Actually, while on the subject, if anyone's interested, I can try to arrange one in Cork too.

Is that with KC Systems out in watergrasshill? Another recommended place and Donal seems like a decent bloke to deal with. Sure wouldn't do any harm for any munster members to look into it Doc

It's not with Donal, it's with a guy I use all the time. Nothing against Donal, I've heard great things about him too.

Presumably it's not just a BMW day? Mine is a 06 VW GTi?

Martin remapped my car earlier this year. Best few quid I ever spent on it.

Don't know the cost in a group buy, but have had three cars remapped over the years. First one in 1992 when I had my 205 GTI 1.9 worked on with an EPROM from Superchips. I then had my 1996 BMW 525 TDS remapped, but I have to say that having had my BMW X5 2007 remapped using a hand held Bluefin, there is no comparison. You plug in the Bluefin, download the current mapping, connect through your PC to Superchips in the UK, they send you the remap, you plug the Bluefin back into your car and you are done. Even if your friendly local BMW garage reinstalls their software, you just plug your Bluefin back in and remap again. Even though they can't see that your car has been remapped, a test drive by an experienced mechanic might raise suspicions, so you can detune tour car before any main dealer service. Five minutes in either direction. You can even disable the ECU in your car and make it impossible to start, even with the key. Handy fo holidays. They are available on Ebay or just Google Bluefin.

im half think your a shill and half wanting a bluefin

Bluefin? Lol! No substitute for a proper remap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Looked into bluefin. Grand if you have about 550 quid to splash for the priviledge of uploading the map yourself and having the device to reupload on the off chance the map gets replaced by garage but I've heard that it doesnt happen that often so I'd much rather pay the 250-275 now for the regular remap

The problem with Bluefins is that they are a direct off the shelf map. They don't take into account the various fuel octanes available in different countries, and aren't made specifically for individual cars. If 3 different cars share the same engine, the same Bluefin map will do despite there being different gross weights, etc. They'll never even come close to being as good, or as inexpensive as a proper remap.

I seriously doubt that anyone will get a bespoke map for €250, but what do I know. The hand held device may be off the shelf but the map is bespoke, or at least based on your existing map. Without the availability of a four wheel rolling road, I have no way of knowing the exact improvement. I am not selling anything, don't care either way. There is a difference between Superchips an some guy with a laptop that says you will get an extra 60 hp for €250. you pays your money and you take your chance.

But do you understand that the Bluefin isn't even remotely close to a bespoke map? It's bottom of the ladder stuff in terms of remapping. It's designed to be simple and basic for people who want to do things themselves, and as such, has to be limited in the power it offers in case things go wrong - and because it's sold in different markets, it also has to be set to cope with different octane fuels and different ambient temps.

A proper remap isn't just done by a guy with a laptop on his own. Not these days. What is done these days is that the car's existing map is extracted, emailed to a tuning house where they will select one of a dozen maps suitable for that car depending on the factors I've mentioned above, and eMail a modified map back which will unleash the true potential of the car. Plus, because these are done through tuning houses, if the car has additional performance products fitted like a free flowing manifold & exhaust, or uprated injectors, smaller supercharger pulleys, etc, they can also adjust the maps for the individual car to capitalise on these.

Point taken, all remapping is a compromise. When you buy your car the ECU is mapped for everything fro Alaska to Africa, from modern super fuels to camel piss from a Jerry can. My Bluefin may only have whittled those peramitors to Western Europe, using clean fuel for use on normal roads, while your remapping may be county and garage specific for use on track days in August.

Remapping can be overdone, you may not care, but pushing diesels to the edge all of the time causes damage. In a former life we owned an engine reconditioning shop.

Not these days. We have rev limiters and we have engines which can be run at much higher tolerances before. Remaps don't push engines to 110% of their abilities, more like they free them from being at 75% of their power and lift it up to 90%. There's still safeguards built in.

Well said Doc. I believe this is how Martin works. He takes your existing map off the car a week or so in advance which is sent away for analysis then a custom map is sent back to him to suit your car. Then on the actual remapping day everyones custom maps are uploaded to their car. He has asked about performance upgrades on the car which can lead to increased gains so obviously this is all taken into account.

    Current Status is:

    Price:
€275 for 10 people signed up

This sounds interesting, always tempted but couldn't be bothered with the trip to Dublin. Had expected the prices to drop a bit for this service over the last couple of years but seems to be as costly as ever :(

    Do they have rolling road?
Actually there's few of us in Kerry, but we need to check how much bhp left in our cars before we go further ;) Is there any RR in Kerry/Cork?

2 places left for the group buy

Just want to say I was out with Martin on Saturday morning.. Less than an hour all in and up from 200bhp to 240bhp on my Mk5 GTi. Super job and very noticeable difference in power and torque. Especially in the higher gears. Just can't put any power down in the wet!

am I too late to get in on this deal, even if I am just wondering what difference a remap could make to my car have an 04 passat tdi 6spd 130bhp sports model(apparently) according to logbook, does 0-60 in about 10 flat would there be much of a reduction in this time?
