Hi, I've a Nokia E52 currently for sale on adverts.ie and I've been contacted by pm by a a guy called 'Sanjay Coolma' who is 'very interested' in purchasing my phone. He has given me his email address to continue with the 'transaction'. Something seems odd as he is offering over 100 euros extra for the delivery! This is how the email conversations have developed.....

    Him
I want your phone. Hope is still available for sale with the final price? replay direct to my mail box at ..................@yahoo.co.uk.

    Me
Hi, yeah its for sale at the final price. Where are you, by the way?

    Him
    hello there,
thanks for the fast response,i am actually buying the item for someone abroad as a present and i will pay you 230EUR for the cost of the item and the postage abroad through Royal Mail International Delivery signed for,so kindly send me a request from paypal to complete the payment and also dont forget to take the item off the site...i look forward to your fast response.....thanks

    Me
Which phone are you referring to, sanjay? The Nokia or the Sony Ericsson*?

*(I have sold another phone on there before)

    Him
both the nokia and the sony. so give me your final price for it now and your paypal email so that i can proceed with the payment immediately.

    Me
You mean you want to purchase 2 phones? The Sony Ericsson has been sold already. The Nokia E52 ....here,,,,,http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=299688 ..... is still for sale at 170 euros.

    Him
The nokia is ok by me then and i will be paying you 270EUR for the item and the postage so get back to me with paypal email so that i can make the payment.

    Me
Your proposition doesnt make any sense. Why would you want to purchase a phone for 270 euros from me when you can purchase the same phone in the high street for 230 euros?

    Him
i have added the shipping with the money that is it. so if that is not ok by you then give your price.

    Me
You're offering to spend 100 euros on shipping??!!

    Him

    Yes.

    Me
You are either a scam artist or an idiot. Either way...i dont trust you!

    Him
if you don't ready to make deal you stop why are insulting me? it better you be very careful.

    Him
what you are doing is unfair this my first time of trying to ship an item abroad at least you will correct me maybe this money is not up to that amount instead you are insulting me this is very very bad.

    Me
Have you purchased any other items from boards.ie before?

    Him
    no.

    Me
Do you not know that you can purchase the very same phone online from the nokia website and have it delivered to the UK for alot less than you're offering me?

    Him
I told you this is my time of transacting online.

    END

Of course i have no intention of going any further with this guy but i wonder......It is possible for a scam to take place with him simply knowing the email address of my paypal account? Can he cancel as soon as the transaction is accepted? Notice also how is english is good at the beginning and then develops into that of a child. All a bit weird, dont ye think?

But how does it work? How do i get screwed?

    You send the Paypal request.

They get all the details and then arrange to send you a 'fake' payment notification email that for all intensive purposes looks like the real thing but isn't.

(Assuming you're dumb enough) You don't check your actual Paypal account, assume the fake email is legit and send them the item.

    Interesting. That makes sense. Thanks.

You were contacted by PM? This is one of the reasons why all dealings should be on-thread on Adverts. Others will spot the scam, and warn you. Dealing off-thread is against Adverts rules, not just to be picky, but to offer you more protection too.

As soon as I read E100 extra for shipping I knew it was a scam.
These type of scams are so common now.

As jor el said, best to keep discussions on-thread in the public eye.

Yeah, never deal with some chancer who PM's you & won't deal through the adverts.ie site.

You're asking for trouble the moment you entertain this.

The fact you're asking is this a scam tells me you're tempted because of the extra few quid he's offering.

Deal only on thread & agree with a face to face transaction unless the person has a good record/feedback :D

You should also report the scam buyer to the Adverts mods so they can ban his account. He won't stop with just you, of that you can be sure.

I've tried to contact adverts.ie about reporting the scam but the link to do that doesnt work.

Just recieved an email about an mp3 player I have for sale. How do they think anyone will fall for this scam. They are offering 100 pounds over the asking price. Surely if they just offered the asking they would suck more people in. Plus dont mention Nigeria would help.
