This thread serves a platform for posting competitions. Please read through the guidelines carefully before submitting your competition and, when in doubt, feel free to contact one of the mods.

    Operation of this Thread and General Rules;

Replies to posts on this thread by PM ONLY - No replies on thread whatsoever and no exceptions.

We have established that there are 2 sorts of users posting competitions:
    1) Regular users who want to share with other users.
    2) Companies/charities/... posting their own competitions.

We welcome both but do ask to adhere to the following guidelines.

Where possible, please use the following form to post the competition
1/ The name of the Organisation organising the Comp.
2/ Theme of the competition and any requirements for content in the image.
3/ The technical specifications of the images required. ie. Size of prints and if they need to be mounted etc. Size and format of digital files including things like colour space.
4/ Terms & Conditions including clear information on the rights of use of images entered.
5/ A list of prizes on offer and the method of judging.
    6/ Entry fees payable.
7/ Closing date for entries & date for notification of results.
8/ Contact details for further inquiries.

    1) REGULAR USERS posting COMPS that they feel might interest other users.
    • Post comp form with the information available to you.
    • Provide according link to information/company/etc.
    • Finish your post by stating that you are NOT the organisor of the competition.
    2) COMPANIES - CHARITIES - ORGANISATIONS LOOKING FOR SUBMISSIONS - ETC
    • The ENTIRE form has to be filled in AT ALL TIMES. When not completed, your post will be removed. Simples.
    • Post your CONTACT DETAILS (website or email, no mobile phone numbers) and be prepared to elaborate on specifically the Terms & Conditions of your entry.
    • You might be asked by one of the mods to provide additional information, until those details have been received, the post will be hidden for public view.
We know there is and has been a lot of debate about copyright issues and Terms & Conditions for competitions - but please do keep in mind, that at the end of the day, some photographers don't mind giving away their copyright, and others will be infuriated by this. It is a personal choice and not up for discussion in this specific thread.

We hope that you will use this thread to it's full capacity and share interesting competitions online, in Ireland and the World!

    Best of Luck!

    "No digitally altered images"

Can you possibly elaborate on this? At its most basic meaning this precludes any image taken with a digial camera.

    IrishExaminer competition:
    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the enquiry. We have not put a limit on the number of pictures you can submit, but would suggest people keep it under 10 or so!

    The response I received:
    Hi Tony,
What it means (to us) is: Images may be technically enhanced (Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Dodging & Burning), but cloning (except for dust) is not allowed.
Altered effectively means you cannot change the content of the image in any way (cannot remove ESB lines for example).
I hope this is clear enough!

    Hi MODs,

Was just wondering what the rules are if I wanna start my own competition? Say, I start a competition for a specific photo and give a price (have a load of cameras I don't use, for example, both digital compacts and a couple of film SLR's). Can I just do this or would I need special permission?

    Thanx

The following is an edited version of a event in which some may be interested. The original post came across as Spam, so has been modified.

An invitation for all photographers to photography project
The project is organised by Ifrah Ahmed (FGM Campaigner and Strong Voice of Amnesty International) and 4thFloorForPhoto

The Aim of Lifelong Victims Faces of FGM is to raise awareness of the issues of FGM by inviting photographers to provide submissions that will be collated for an exhibition in Dublin and used in a fundraising calendar both of which will take place on International Day of Zero Tolerance of FGM in February 2012.
The project intends to portray the horrors of practices of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Works have to be in high resolution jpg format and should portray people (women and men) connected to FGM problem. We leave to the imagination and skills of artists of how the works will be staged or edited.

All photographers submitting their works are kindly asked to be aware and respect Dochas Code of Conduct. More details: www.dochas.ie/Code/Default.aspx

The admission is free. Photographers will be credited but not paid for their admissions:
     - 12 works that will be selected for internationally sold calendar, all proceeds go to support FGM Campaign
     - Exhibition held initially in Dublin, we will inform later on other cities/countries that will host the exhibition

To carry out our project at the highest level possible of artistic appreciation, we decided to appoint a selection panel made of people who are deeply connected to the photographic world. The judges we have chosen are accomplished photographers themselves. They already reached the level where they can promote others and publish their works. Their professional achievements ensure that our project will bring qualities otherwise unachievable.

    The Panel:
Miki Barlok, Editor of None Magazine
Agata Stoinska, Editor of Blow Magazine
    Paul Kelly

Photographers can send up to 3 works in JPG format to fgm.competition@gmail.com until 15 December 2011. The results will be announced in mid January. The exhibition and the launch of the calendar is planned for 4th February 2012.

If you have any questions or want to access the project, please send an email to fgm.competition@gmail.com and we will gladly answer and send you Info Pack and Agreement Form.

...A winner will be chosen at random....

So the winner won't be chosen using any photographic merits? Its just a luck of the draw style competition? Thats not really a competition as far as I understand it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 LookWest.ie

    Hi Trooney,

It is not a photo competition. Please click on the link to our competition at the end of our comment. You will see it is simply a multiple choice question to enter the competition.

Yes, the winner will be picked out of a hat, just like a sweepstakes, which is very commonly done in competitions.

    Thanks

The Cork Animal Care Society is now holding a monthly photo competition. All proceeds go towards the welfare of animals.

1/ The name of the Organisation organising the Comp. Cork Animal Care Society (www.animalcaresociety.ie)
2/ Theme of the competition and any requirements for content in the image. Must be related to animals.
3/ The technical specifications of the images required. ie. Size of prints and if they need to be mounted etc. Size and format of digital files including things like colour space. The files we receive by email are the ones we use to judge and post on Facebook (note that if the photo wins, it might be compressed to appear on our website and blog).
4/ Terms & Conditions including clear information on the rights of use of images entered. Anybody can submit by paying a €3.50 entry fee (going towards the welfare of animals). The winner will be asked to sign a form authorising the ACS to put the photo up on the website and blog, but also as the cover of our monthly booklet of creative writing. Further use of the photo will be discussed with the owner. We insist that the photo should be the work of the person who submits it and we ask for the winner to sign a plagiarism form.
5/ A list of prizes on offer and the method of judging. It will be a different prize every month. In February we offer the Royal Canin Cat Encyclopedia (2 volumes). Photos are displayed in an album on Facebook where everybody can vote for them. The 5 photos receiving the most votes are then judged by a panel of key members of the Cork Animal Care Society. Judges are obviously not allowed to participate in the competition.
          6/ Entry fees payable. €3.50
7/ Closing date for entries & date for notification of results. 20th of every month. Beginning of following month.

So the winner won't be chosen using any photographic merits? Its just a luck of the draw style competition? Thats not really a competition as far as I understand it?

I would agree with that trooney. I always imagine such competitions are merely a way to get lots of photographs sent in from which the competition runners can pick any they want to keep for future advertising campaigns and without the organisers really having to do any work in sifting through and sorting/grading pics and in many cases without the bother of finding judges.

Never heard of it before but i came across this today, somewhat randomly but it looks interesting enough to share.

          http://www3.syngenta.com/global/photo/en/Home/Pages/Home.aspx

Its the kind of thing you could plan for, shoot it, and submit before Jan 2013. Might be useful for anyone in need of the usual winter blues kick up the butt to get out and shoot, perhaps this time with a purpose.

          T&C's look reasonable.

Nope, (quite obviously), i've nothing to do with the actual competition itself. Just though it looked interesting enough to share.
