I need to remove a rear derailleur but I don't want to cut the cable as it will be left too short. How can I just remove the ferrule?

grab it with a pliers and pull.

The ferrules are usually squeezed on to the wire using a pliers. You should be able to see the marks left by the pliers. By squeezing (gently) at 90 degrees to the axis in which it was squeezed onto the wire it should be possible to make it loose on the wire again, then just pull straight off. If you're careful the ferrule can even stay in good enough shape to be reused.

Exactly what I do. I usually get about three or four uses out of a ferrule.

One good thing about this crippling recession is I can finally be open about my incessant, cheese-paring frugality!

25 years worth of ferrules for a tenner.

Surely there are more effective ways of being frugal? :)

I don't think they're called ferrules, more like "anti-fray ends". Ferrules are the things which go over the outers.

They're quite cheap in quantity, even from Wiggle.

You can usually get em free from a bike shop tbh

Well, every ferrule cable end cap I re-use saves me a princely 10c. More pathology than thrift, I grant you.

Just cut it and fit a new cable. sounds like the original is too short anyway.

There's no reason to remove the crimp at all - you can disconnect the cable from the derailleur by just unclamping it from the derailleur - no need to do any cutting. Brakes are a different matter though.

The ferrule won't pull through the adjuster barrel...

The last one I fitted got caught between the chain and derailleur and just removed itself:o.
