Christmas Day falls on a Saturday this year and Stephens' Day falls on a Sunday.

So should people have the Monday and Tuesday off to make up for these two bank holidays. If various business's close all during Christmas, i.e. Christmas Day to New Years, then should two extra days off be added in January to make up for Christmas Day and Stephens' Day being on the weekend.

Same goes for New Years Day - this also falls on a Saturday - so should an extra day be added again to the holidays.

What I am asking is, which is the right day to return to work in January - is it

    a. Monday January 3
    b. or Thursday January 6

Here is the offical word: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/leave-and-holidays/public-holidays-in-ireland
Public holidays falling on a weekend

Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. This occurs in 2010 when Christmas Day (25 December) falls on a Saturday and St Stephen's Day (26 December) falls on a Sunday. It also occurs in 2011 when New Year's Day (1 January) falls on a Saturday. This means that Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December 2010, and Monday 3 January 2011 are not public holidays. When this happens you are entitled to the normal alternative arrangements concerning employment and public holidays that is:

A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
An additional day of annual leave
    An additional day's pay
The nearest church holiday to the public holiday as a paid day off.
Your employer can require you to attend work on those days.

if I read that right, that just says you are not entitled to the NEXT working day off, but that you ARE entitled to days off to make up for the bank holidays falling on the weekend - so does that mean we can have three extra days sometime after Christmas? it's confusing
