In the name of writing!

Re-reading an article today that had an interview with Joseph O' Connor and his story of how he just took himself off to London so that he could concentrate properly on his writing. I'm tempted to do something similar. Lacking the courage, what with having a few personal factors holding me back.

Has anyone ever gone and done something like this before?

It sounds a bit extreme, and they have the internet in London as well.

Which can be a major distraction alright

He said he wanted to go to a place where he didn't know anybody and so really it seems the idea behind it was to go where you wouldn't have friends/family/job etc. putting in on your writing.

London is an insanely expensive place to live, plus there aren't any artist tax-breaks in the UK.

I think it's more about creating a space to write where you currently live.

    Sometimes that isn't possible.

You could try applying to a residential writer's retreat like annamacarrig- you only pay what you can afford- but you'd need to show you have a track record.

If you need to get away- then there are nearer places than London. Opt for cheap hotel deals in cheap hotels for a few nights to see how you get on.
