Registering as self employed - how long should it take to hear back?

My brother recently started working on a freelance basis, and he put in his registration as self employed with revenue in early September.

He still hasn't heard anything back. Is this normal? I know it's a very busy time of the year for revenue, but he's left wondering what he should do about making a preliminary payment for his first year by Oct 31 if he doesn't get any acknowledgment from Revenue about his registration by then.

I've told him he should call his local office, but he is a little hesitant because there was a long-ish gap in his employment prior to this - i.e. he basically fell off the system for a while and was living at the family home off of savings - and he worries about drawing any undue attention and questioning about his registration.

    Thanks for any help!

If I remember rightly, it was a few weeks between sending in my TR1 and getting my official letter back. I wouldn't worry, he will be registered from the date he entered on the TR1.

If he has only become self employed in 2010, he does not need to file a tax return until October 2011.
In 2011 he will file based on his income from 2010, and pay what is due, while also paying preliminary tax on 2011 (it is either 100% of his total tax owed in 2010, or 90% of this total from 2011).
Tell him to go and have a chat in the Revenue office if he can. They are very helpful (or at least they were in my case).
Tell him to be putting aside money now also (if he's not doing it already). Every time I get paid, I put aside between 20-30% in to 'tax' account, which I don't touch until I need to pay my taxes each year.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Fiii, helps a lot!

And just to check, he doesn't have to even make a preliminary payment this year, for 2010? It's optional?

Nope. As long as he only became self employed in 2010, he doesn't have to file anything (apart from the TR1 of course) until 2011.
I am currently in the process of filing for and paying my income tax for 2009 (and preliminary for 2010). This is my first time filing and paying, as I became self employed in 2009.
So next year, he will file/ pay for tax on earnings from 2010, and preliminary on 2011.
If he expects to earn over €37,500 in 1 year, he must also register for VAT.

Lots of info here for him: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/types-of-employment/self-employment/self-employment-as-an-individual
