about 6 weeks ago went to start the car and it was giving a whining noise when you turned the key,it also sounded like there was no petrol getting to thw engine as it was turning over(with a whing sound) but not fireing. we left it there an lent on holiday, came back 3weeks later and it started, using jump leads. Been driving grand since. got up yesterday wont start, just keeps turning over but not fireing. Sound like petrol pump to a novice like me, but the whining a couple of weeks ago is something different and surely they are related? its a 05 opel astra 1.6 petrol,
    any thoughts?

When you were "driving grand", did you drive far in one trip? Or short little trips? If short little trips, the battary may charge up much (only do small trips to work most of the time myself), and when a cold snap happens, it looses all power. Maybe borrow a car-battery charger off someone, and charge the battery overnight.

thanks for the reply syco. It went on long and short trips, battery doesnt seem to be the problem, its turning over, and over and over, (well you get the picture) but not fireing. i'll jump it again but sounds like something else.

I had a same problem with Matiz and the reason was that automatic petrol off switch was activated,

So basically car thinks that it has been in crash and disconnects petrol to the engine, then when you press the button petrol flow is restored and car runs again,

    damn modern cars...

To see if it's fuel related spray easy start into the air intake (while cranking), if it starts then it's a fuel issue and not a spark or battery issue.
