This may sound like a stupid question but I suppose there's no such thing as a stupid question if you don't know the answer :pac:

Anyway years of playing sport (badly) has caught up and I need to get a hernia done. But I don't have a GP. I haven't been to the doctor since I was a child.

So what do I do to get a referral? Can I just turn up at a local GP surgery and ask for an appointment or should I go back to my family GP that I last saw when I was young - I don't even live in the area anymore?

    Thanks medical boardies :)

You might find that some GPs aren't taking on new patients, so ring around to see who is first.

Ask around your town who is good and make an appointment...

There's a good list at www.irishhealth.com (under "find a professional") or also the Golden pages under' Doctors - General Practitioners.
    www.goldenpages.ie

If they have MICGP or MRCGP after their names as it's a sign they are fully trained GP's.

    Or here
