Memory foam Mattresses??

    Hi,

Looking into getting a memory foam mattress, have done a good bit of googling on it & it seems that some of the important requirements are: minimum actual memory foam thickness should be 3" but preferably 4" or 5" & with a density/weight of more than 4lbs per sq ft. amongst others.

There are lots out there with memory foam on top of pocket springs, but I think memory foam on top of reflex foam or similar is probably better.

Tempur are the market leaders apparently, but also ridiculously expensive. I've found one called Visco Pro Ultimate which seems to be pretty good for the money.

Really looking to see if anyone has any actual experience with any memory foam mattresses & any further tips or advice based on experience.

    Thanks
    Myles

I have the King Koil Aspen and it's unbelievably comfortable http://www.clerysbedstore.ie/product/652/40/aspen_king

It's worth bearing in mind that a mattress like this is much higher than a normal one and unless your bed base is low you could find yourself having to climb up into bed (I'm 5' 3" and I had to until we bought a newer lower base). Another thing is that memory foam mattresses are a lot warmer than normal ones so if you hate being too warm in bed it might not suit you.

I would recommend the Sealy Posturepedic Pillowtop mattress. Very comfortable and also supportive. So pleased with my first one that I bought a second for a spare room. If you cannot find them in the stores (so many stores closing down now) you can order from argos. But of course then you don't get to try it out.

got one from Caseys in Limerick when expecting first child a few years ago- found it very supportive. It was expensive and is now in spare room because other half prefers standard orthopaedic. Memory foam is very 'dead' no spring effect like regular mattress - you wouldn't notice anyone getting in or out beside you - good for light sleepers!

Thanks all for your replies, I'm really looking for someone who has had experience with a non sprung memory foam mattress, as having springs in them really kind of defeats the whole object of memory foam.

This is because, when you compress a spring, it's natural reaction is to try to spring back to it's original position, so when you lie on it, it is always trying to push against you. Memory foam (temperature sensitive memory foam) will just support your weight rather than trying to push against you, which is why it gives the effect that you are floating.

There is a fairly good one I think, called Ergoflex, available online only at present, although I'm dubious as to whether all their reviews are genuine.

i went looking a few yrs back thinking mem foam was way to go but was told by my chiro that pocket sprung with mem foam was better support.
If i had the money i would have gotten me a king koil with cushion topper but got a great deal on a silent night up north. 1\3 price of the king koil. Not as good but all the same a very good mattress.

Agree with this, spring mattress with memory foam top.
I went with pillow top becasue you can't use elec. blanket with memory foam.
    I got the O'Dearest Autumn Glow....HEAVEN!!!

I am also looking to purchase a memory foam mattress at the moment. We looked at a Natural Sleep Company one at the weekend and thought it was very comfortable. Can anyone tell me how their mattresses compare in the grand scheme of things?

Definitly an idea to shop around an try a few types. I just bought the "memory foam mattress" from the same shop I've had my last 2 mattresses from (which were excellent) as it was just at the tail end of the january sale. Kicking myself now. Usually I shop around for months on end but I wa trying to be more effective and procrastinate less.

Anyway this memory foam over pocket sprung mattress arrived on friday and it seems really soft and saggy. I was told they take a bit of getting used to but I'm really unconvinced so far. Our previous two mattresses were plain pocket sprung from the same place and were all excellent but the pocket sprung layer seems pretty wobbly on this. Also using my spirit level shows one corner to seemingly be not flat but the others are. So I dunno if this is faulty, just doesn't suit me or both. In either case I think I'll be on the phone first thing tomorrow to try and send it back but I dunno how that'll pan out.

Most of all I'm kicking myself for having my old mattress taken away as it was much more firm and wasn't this bad.
