Hi lads, I have a Giant SCR3 with a crap triple chainset, its a cheap FSA model with curved cranks. I was thinking of putting on a Shimano 105 triple instead but was wondering if it would work with the Sora shifters and Sora front changer. I really dont want the expense of changing the shifters if I can avoid it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Glencarraig, I changed one recently on a Giant to an Ultegra triple and all worked fine. You will need to change the BB if going from FSA to Shimano. You will also need to adjust the travel of the front mech and inner and outer limit screws.
Got a good deal on both from CRC at the time about 85€ for chainset and BB.

This is not necessarily true; I put an Ultegra SL chainset on with a FSA MegaExo BB (FSA Gossamer crankset) and it works fine. Both are integrated-spindle types. Not all integrated spindle crank/BBs are compatible by a long way but that particular FSA BB is Shimano-compatible (others are not.)

If your bike comes with a square taper or other actual physical BB standard though you will have to change it for the appropriate BB cups to take an integrated-spindle crankset.

I'm not sure you will realise any great improvement by this upgrade however.

Why? Swapping one triple chainset for another triple chainset? Fine if the one you have is worn or something, but other than that it seems to be a waste of time, energy and money. "curved cranks" is the FSA that ugly?

yes it is that ugly !!, the cranks do have a curve in them, some designer obviously thought they looked nice !!, I think the BB is sha**ed anyway, bad clunking noise coming from it. I have no problem replacing a triple with a triple, its my winter bike and I do like to climb hills! and I'm not going through the expense of changing shifters and mechs.

    Hi Blorg

That's interesting. I recently changed one, an FSA Omega crankset for the Tiagra as above because it was damaged and the Tiagra axle was too wide to go through the FSA BB cups? It was also on a Giant not sure which model though. It was the one with Tiagra mechs and carbon fork?

    Cheers

fair enough!..off you go so. have a look at headsets while your at it. Noises from the BB sometimes come from the headset bearings and not the BB itself.

changed to an Ultegra SL 52/39 myself at the weekend and had to change to a shimano BB. Had a GXP and it wouldnt fit. Managed to get an Ultegra SL BB for only 25 quid in cyclesuperstore. I think they've a sale on all their shimano BBs! It was cheaper than anywhere online.

To be honest, I'm simply sick of the sight of the FSA chainset, it is simply the most ugly piece of engineering i have ever seen, and add in the clunking noise (which is the BB for sure and not the headset) I just want rid, so I want to make the most basic change I can, cant afford new shifters and bits to go compact.
