Nepotism at work. what should I do ???

I started working for a small company about 4 years ago. When i was hired I was hired to do outside sales, lots of travel, working with salesmen from other companies, doing trade shows...etc..

Long story short, the economy got bad, money was tight, but I continued to ask when I would start doing what I was hired to do. I was continually told that money was tight right now but as soon as the money was there that I would start doing what I was hired to do. So I kept showing up every day, working in the office, doing things that needed to get done, assuming that I was just doing this until I could start doing the outside sales stuff.

During this time the boss's stepdaughter started working for the company. she is 23, I am 33. I found out that over the 4th of july week, she was down in atlanta doing exactly what I had been waiting to do for 4 years, I was under the impression that she was visiting family in alabama.

I didnt find out she was doing road work until a few weeks later and the only reason I found out was because someone from another company needed to speak to " the girl who was down here working with our salesmen before she comes back down next week to work with them again". I asked the girl if she was working in Atlanta next week and she was shocked that I had found out, but said she was.

I like my job, and like the people I work with. But being lied to and not being given the opportunity the do the job that I was hired for and promised since day 1 has made it very difficult to come to work and do my job with any kind of motivation.

So my question is this. If I quit , can I get unemployment ?? I have done some reading about nepotism and laws about "constructive discharge" and it seems like this situation is one where I would be able to collect unemployment. I dont want to be unemployed and will look for a job right away, but it is tough out there right now and know it may take some time to find a new job. But at the same time , I feel like I got completely screwed here. I was promised a job and then it was given to the stepdaughter just because she is pretty and a family member. I am unable to take my job seriously because I feel like I am no longer working towards a goal and am just coming here everyday wasting both my time and the companies time. But I know my boss wont fire me.

What should I do???? Anyone ever in a similar situation??

I don't think Irish law would apply if you're in USA?

ha, is this board mostly for people in Ireland?? My bad. I was trying to find a forum to ask advice and this was the only one I could find.

    sorry..

    you should...

    1. Find another job.. THEN QUIT
    2. Dont stress about nepotism, its an unfortunate, unfair part of life you will have to get used to.

rick_fantastic- thanks. i am looking for another job, but it is rough out there. But I am trying.

I just dont know how much longer I can keep coming into work and keep my sanity. It is been a rough situation to deal with, both mentally and physically. I have been having problems sleeping and have probably lost around 25 pounds in the last 6 weeks.

I dont think it is healthy for me to continue working here...

I'm not saying you have to leave at all. It's just that while we have all sorts of posters it's an irish website and I'm not sure anyone would be able to help with specifics such as your employment entitlements. They would be different for us. That's all. Maybe another American poster will be able to stop by and help on that particular part :)

bluewolf - thanks. Yeah, I realize that you guys have different rules and laws and I could have found a better place to ask this. I didnt take you past like you were asking me to leave. it is all good.

If it helps , all four of my grandparents were from ireland !

Probably best to sit tight and start looking elsewhere for another job. Don't quit on the spur of the moment

This is primarly an Irish site, posters will try to help but few here would know enough about US employment law and procedures.

Sure good luck in whatever happens :)
