My Ford Focus is making a low whirring sound. It sounds like a second engine but it seems to be coming from the back of the car. Its driving fine but the steering is a bit stiff and has been for a while now so may not be related.

To be honest the sound could be there for a while too but I only noticed when my OH pointed it out to me recently. It seems to be louder while accelerating but it can be also heard clearly on braking. Any ideas what it could be? Got it serviced in March and there was no issues.

Is the noise only while driving or is it when its idling too? Its hard to diagnose a strange noise without hearing it.

While idling----It could be a blow in the exhaust.

    Only while driving
It could be a wheel bearing .

It really depends on what type of noise it is. Can you go into more detail?

    Wheel bearing or binding brake?

Thanks for your quick replies. The only way I can describe the noise is similar to the engine noise (whirring?) but a good bit deeper if ya get me. Thats why I didn't really notice it til it was pointed out to me.

It definitley isn't there when the engine is idleing and even if I rev when the car isn't moving there is no noise. Would this suggest it might be a wheel bearing? Is this a major job? Sorry bit clueless about these things.

Well in that case I'd say its prob a wheel bearing. Its not a major job and shouldnt cost too much at a local indy garage. Get it looked at as soon as you can though to confirm that its a wheel bearing as it'll only get worse.
