    http://www.vg247.com/2010/10/05/source-psp2-to-release-holiday-2011/
Developers and publishers have been told that PSP2 will release at the end of next year, a British source familiar with the matter has told VG247.

“We’ve been told it’s coming in late 2011,” said our man.

As has been previously reported, developers have been creating games for the system for many months, with Netherrealm Studios being the first to go on the record and admit it had a dev kit last month.

PSP2 is about as badly concealed as a games system can be. It’s been common knowledge for much of this year that content is being made for the system, and that dev kits are in the wild.

CPU and GPU specs have yet to be confirmed.

A large amount of off-the-record information was released in May 2010, and the flow of rumour has been constant throughout the year.

We were told in May that games had already been canned for the system.

Only last month, Develop again reiterated the fact that numerous developers were creating content for PSP2, saying that Sony was aiming for a “significant launch window line-up”.

Sony has been obviously silent on the chatter, but has gone on the record to say there are “no plans” to include 3D. This tallies with what we’ve been told in the past month.

The machine has a forward-facing and backward-facing camera, and will come with both touch-screen and physical controls.

Given the projected release date, it seems likely PSP2 will be announced at GDC or E3 next year.

I hope it's true and I hope it's a brilliant console but as always with Sony I won't hold my breath

Please be an android fone / playstation hybrid.

There is no way they will use android. It would be homebrew heaven and Sony are very anti that sort of thing.

Knowing Sony they will put a ridiculous price tag on it ala the PSPGo

    Go was 250 euros right?

I expect PSP2 to be the same price. But that's a bit more justifiable in the case of a PSP2 - it will be a new machine, presumably with new tech etc.

3DS will likely be 250 too, and I don't expect Sony to be cheaper.

Re. android, I think the current rumours are that PSP2 won't run on Android, but you will be able to get a phone version that runs both PSP2 and Android separately. If that makes sense. So you can switch between Android or PSP2.

That raises some questions - like what happens if someone tries to call you when you're in PSP2 mode - but we'll see what they've come up with if these rumours are true.

Might be in a minority but I hope it's a pure gaming console, no touch-screen, no motion controls, no gimmicks, just a beefed up handheld console with two analogue sticks a massive screen and enough gigaflopites to make your head spin.

I'm with you on this one. Phone capabilities and the such are no use to me I just want analogue sticks/buttons and a sweet screeen that'll do nicely thanks

Look, Sony can't keep secrets, but we were told a long time ago that this was coming. In 2010.

I don't think it can go much later than this.

I'm hoping it's not download only but I think that could be wishful thinking. I've heard the clever money is on the device being targetted at the iPhone/Android market rather than going after the 3DS (which it will almost certainly lose if it went against it).

    Dear Sony,

We would like the following features for the PSP2:

    1. An analogue stick that isn't a load o'crap.

That is all. Better hardware would be nice too.

    Signed,
    Everyone.

Got sick of custom firmware updates so got rid of it and now regretting it after I've read all the reports of peoples UMD drives failing. Is there a Sony console out there that doesn't have laser problems? Hoping the games comeon some sort of flash memory if there are retail games.

At this stage it should have the equivalent processing power of somewhere between a PS2 and a PS3, if possible leaning more towards PS3 (by equivelqant i mean on terms of a 40" screen downto a 4-5", shouldnt be to hard).

Two analogues sticks, cos you know, controlling the camera is useful.

    Return of the UMD!

The question I would have to ask before making any purchase is are Sony going to really back this to the hilt? IMO they haven't fully supported PSP, few quality games etc.

From their comments about a DD only future, I don't think the PSP2 will be DD only. It'll be like the PSP is now with games releasing in stores and on PSN. Let's just hope they have all the publishing agreements sorted out from the get go so we don't end up with any Birth by Sleep situations.

I'd hack it again for ya if needs be, or I'm sure another Boardsie would. It only takes a couple of minutes anyways.

I too am hoping for some flash type media. Ideally I'd love a cartridge and a download code in the same box, or something to that effect.
    Return of the UMD!
No, curse you! UMD needs to die! Flash media or equivalent ftw!

I'd rather have more battery life, less drive noise and less parts that can break.

You're a pet! :) I'd keep it in mind in case something bad happens, seems to be going strong though. My biggest worry now is if Valkyria Chronicles 3 doesn't get a western release and there's a fan translation :)

Well I just found this site regarding the PSP2
    Right here
Some good stuff on it but I'd take most of it with a pinch of salt until something concrete is released by Sony

    kotaku

Around the time of the Tokyo Game Show, Sony held a private meeting at its offices in Tokyo's Aoyama. The purpose was to show off the PSP2.

Several sources have confirmed to Kotaku that the PSP2 does have a previously rumored touch panel on the back of the hardware. The touch panel was described as looking like a big mouse trackpad. When Sony showed the PSP2, it did not provide concrete details regarding how the trackpad will be implemented in games and instead is leaving that to the discretion of game developers.

The screen itself is not only sharper than the current PSP's, but about an inch larger. The larger screen means that the PSP2 will be larger as well. In the private meetings, Sony is touting the screen as "HD".

A larger PSP should not be that big of an issue for Sony — especially in a mobile environment with large tablets like the iPad. It also shows that Sony realizes it is no longer simply competing with Nintendo, but also Apple.

It is unclear whether this is the same handheld described by the Wall Street Journal. According to the the paper, Sony is working on a device that mixes a game player, an e-book reader and a netbook computer.

Currently, the PSP2's hardware is not finalized, and Sony is having problems balancing battery, power and heat. There are apparently overheating issues, but Sony is, of course, aiming to have those issues corrected by the time the hardware is publicly shown.

Sony set the PSP2's goals, but is still tinkering with the portable's innards. The PSP2's tech specs are expected to change.

only 2 "big" handheld gaming devices in fairness, didnt take a rocket scientist

Am i the only one that think rocket science is not what it was in the 50s, making psp/ds is harder than rocket science so we need a new term.

Has anyone else seen the above images? Do you think they are real? If so, are you interested in getting it?

Personally, while it does look fantastic, hardware-wise, its the software support that I think Sony need to push for the PSP2 to be a success.

Again though, dual analog sticks, front- and back-facing cameras, microphone, backend touchpad... this could truly be fantastic.

Supposed pictures of the PSP2 dev kit leaked.

I doubt it's real. (Not a sony psp anyway)

Just posted about that in another thread. Apparently it's not the final form and they've replaced the slider design due to overheating problems.
At least there's 2 analogue sticks otherwise it'd tank big time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

Kotaku say that one of their trusted sources has confirmed that these are authentic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,469 ✭✭✭✭GTR63

This is on of those dev testing kits isn't it. These never reveal the final hardware design.I remember the 3DS one was leaked & the Buttons & Screens were all over the place on it. I imagine that they'll move around the analogue sticks so that it matches the Dualshock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,493 ✭✭✭RedXIV

likewise, the first PS3 Dev kits were the size of a table!

    I don't think it's a dev kit, it's probably a testing or debug unit.

I also am leaning on it being real. The interface layout and its implications are too clever for a faker to have thought through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,078 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Its the developers console but it is a good starting point for what will come, major plus is the 2 sticks so you can play FPS.

If they add an internet browser that works it will be awesome.

Will i get one ? yea course i will no matter how much i say i wont im a sucker for new technology :D

I don't think it's fair to criticize sony's laser failure rate of, say,(at the very very highest) 20% given the failure rates of the xbox, and the fail rates of the wii are so small because they are not as powerful (i.e.they need less complicated hardware = less things to go wrong).

re: the flash memory, surely we are almost at the stage where games will be sold on small usb sticks?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well it kind of is fair considering the only consoles I've ever had fail on me for laser reasons are Sony consoles. There's something wrong there.

re: the flash memory, surely we are almost at the stage where games will be sold on small usb sticks?

It won't be a usb base system, but I've seen very cheap write once memory cards those would be the next offering I'd think.

I don't mind a optical disc base umd, but even with it going into a portable it would have been better to have plain old DVDs without the little case.
