Discussion on Torrent sites

I just read a post a few minutes ago regarding a torrent site. The moderator commented that users are not allowed speak about torrent sites. I would just like to know why this is? We use bittorrent here in work to install windows updates throughout the LAN, it's an extremely valuable way for users to get their material out there without worrying about hosting or bandwidth or anything like that.

I know that torrents are used to download pirated material but I'm still not sure why discussion of torrent sites is banned here on boards. Can anyone clear this up for me please?

As long as the site only hosts legal material then it's fine.

Wouldn't this be the same as RapidShare or any other site that hosts illegal content then?

It's just that there is a discussion here about RapidShare and akaik it's used to host lots of pirated material too and nothing was mentioned about this site.

    Just curious is all.

    Cheers

Rapidshare is (IMO) more frequently used to host non-pirated gear than torrent sites are. While torrents are unquestionably used for legitimate purposes, their overriding use is in pirated stuff from what I can see.

As AC says...you can discuss torrent technology and anything that's not about pirating. I actually think it's a genius piece of technology. Beyond that though I'll apply what I consider common sense. If I think there's a reasonable chance we're talking pirating, I'll close the thread.

An example of bittorrent discussion is the P2P megathread in the Broadband forum, people are free to discuss port forwarding etc but just not sources for copyright material.
