    Hi there,
I am doing Single honours Music and English in college with 50 credits music and 10 English. I was just wondering would I be able to teach both subjects up to leaving cert if I did a PGDE? If not would it be possible to go back and do English in another degree?
    thanks very much
    Alli:)

According to the Teaching Council website, English would have to form a minimum of 30% of your degree. If you are doing a 180 credit degree and you study 30 credits of english, that would only be 16%. In addition, specification is made of the spread of study required in terms of genres studied.

You can top up your degree with English modules later on but should seek advice from the Teaching Council first to make sure you are covering the correct range of modules. DCU run a distance learning degree of which Literature can form 50%. See www.oscail.ie . Open University also.
