Played the Slieve Russell yesterday morning for the first time in about 2 years and I couldn't help but notice that they have destroyed the 8th hole. There used to be tall pine trees that lined the fairway on the left hand side that forced the golfer down the right or else it would be a blind shot to the green. It used to be one of the best holes on the course. Now for some strange reason they've got rid of every one of these pine trees and planted a few young staked trees instead. They've destroyed what was a very good golf hole.

Anyone played it lately? Anyone remember the way the hole used to be?

PS - Greens were unreal. Amoung the best ive ever played on. They did polefork them yesterday afternoon tho so bear that in mind if you are thinking of playing it soon.

Played in on sun in the Open Singles , Have only played once before about 8 weeks previous , The course is a credit to them , It's in super shape , the greens are without doubt the best greens i've set foot on , Super Fast and super tricky to get a good read on .

Would have like to played the 8th the old way , Its a fairly easy hole with the young staked trees on the left ,

Have to say the 13th hole is top class and a fantastic signature hole .

Heading up there on Thursday and really looking forward to it.
Its unfortunate timing about the pole forking but its the only day that suits.
Sods ****ing law - but it would be a lot worse if we arrived up there without knowing about it.

i also played in the open singles on sun (which i won :D) .the course is in great nick.the greens are savage so bloody fast.
have to say the 3rd green is probably the toughest green ive ever played.a lad playing with me had a 10ft biride putt ended up been 15yards off the green hitting his 4th:eek:
i played the 8th the old way it was alot harder i remember using a rescue club for position to make sure id a shot into the green.now you can just cut the corner and go for it.ruined a good hole alright

Slightly off topic - but you two lads seem to play a good few opens in the Meath area.
What is generally the winning score whne you play??
I'm hoping to play the singles in Kilcock on Friday and I'm wondering what to expect?
    Thanks!

PS. 34 points?? - I'd hand the prize back!!;)

Kilcock is a lovely track , One of the longer courses in the meath area . Greens can be slow , but don't be fooled there tricky enough too , winning score is usually around 40 /42 mark , Funnily enough last time we played there a few weeks ago Thoscon was beaten on the b9 with 41 pts . I'm sure he'll correct me if i'm wrong .

    Thanks.
At 42 points or there abouts - I'll not be threatening any prizes anyway!

Havn't played there since the late 90s so looking forward to see what its like. €15 seems like good value as well.

On that point and back to the OP - I managed to get the Slieve Russell this Thursday for €20 on teetimes.

€35 all in for two good tracks is not bad at all now me thinks.
    Recessionary times eh!

€15 is great value for kilcock , €20 for slieve russell is fantastic value , It was pole forked yesterday i believe , But the course is in immaculate condition , Pole forking of the greens might be a good thing they were lightning quick on Sunday .
