New direction signs at minor junctions

I've noticed recently that many new signs have appeared, certainly around here - S. Kilkenny - on junctions on very minor roads and when these roads join less minor ones.

For example near me there's a three sign pole where a tiny road going to one tiny townsland joins the N24, signposting Waterford, Limerick and (the townsland).

There are three houses down this lane; I'm sure the people living there know which way Waterford is, and they and their relatives who may come from Waterford or Limerick surely know where there houses are.

I'm being flippant, but what's the policy that's dictated that all these new signs clutter up the countryside?

    How much do they cost?

Is it the local authority or the NRA paying for them?

The company that makes the signs must be delighted! (is it one company nationally, or several? I want to buy shares...)

They are there for people who may have to deliver stuff to the three houses, perhaps also for an ambulance which may have to get to a heart attack victim in one of the three houses. These people may not know the area like the back of their hand and you'll be glad of clear navigation if you ever need them!

The bigger problem (by far) cluttering up our countryside is the three houses!
