Back-up utility problem

Ok so I have a 500GB external HDD that was just gathering dust so I figured it would be perfect to use to back-up my 250GB PS3. But of course the PS3 will only read FAT32. So after 2 weeks of trying to find a programme to do it, I finally got my hands on an apple mac. So I made 7 partitions, 6 x 32 GB and the rest in in FAT also. So now when I plug in the HDD to the PS3 it reads it and says there is 31GB free, again fine. But I still can't back-up the PS3 because I have 150GB of stuff on it so I basically just wasted my time.

    Any suggestions?? ....................or help........please

Download partition magic and you should be able to merge all your 32gb partitions

y not reformat the whole hdd into fat 32 and do the back up/restore operation and when your finished use the 250gb for the other purpose you want. This thread might be of some use to you.

Thanks guys. Ya the thread is interesting. My only concern is if I convert the whole HDD to FAT, will that not mean it's not FAT32? So in that case the PS3 can't read it as far as I'm aware. I'm open to correction on that. The drive is completely empty so I'm open to any suggestion because there is no data on the HDD to lose

I just noticed that all your doing is backing up data, theres no need for fat32 then is there. Can u not just connect the 500gb and see if the back up will work . Other than that format the hdd to fat32, the ps3 will recognise it then. Ive an 1tb external hdd now and ive it in fat32 with the usually file names needed for it to work properly.

Backup the entire drive as FAT32. This 32GB limit is ONLY a Windows OS soft limit. There are Windows applications or Linux or MAC OS that can do what you want.

    I believe FAT32 has a 2TB hard limit.
