Wife had her car in for service a few days ago,206cc, ripped off if you ask me but they also told her of things that needed to be done, and she told them hold off, they were kind enough to supply a list:

    2x no.plate bulbs €30
PSF fog bulb €30...the 60 includes focus lights, now how one would focus a no plate or fog light is beyond me, if its the headlights they are on about, that should have been included in the service, but i digress.

The killer is both front and rear disks and pads need to be done soon, still legal but recomended, 220 for front and 200 for rear, along with 2 front brake hoses for front @ €160. I priced these up myself and disks and pads come in about £100 front and back and hoses, pack of 4 come in at £50, delivered, less than €200. Thats a pretty whopping saving of €400.

Now, the question, I am handy enough but have never changed brake related stuff, looked at some tutorials on youtube and it aint rocket science, would people reccomend diy brake work ?

Edit: life insurence is all up to date ! ;)

Someone is trying to put a saddle on you there OP. Very easy to do, as for brake hoses, give them a rub of WD40 and check them for bulges, my guess is that there are none.

    440 for pads alone??
That Renault garage on the way into Galway were offering front pads for 79 yoyo's!...I thought that was pricey!

That was pads and discs all around + fitting.

You could always do it all yourself and then go somewhere for a 'free brake check' if you want peace of mind, or get an indy to check your work. If youre changing hoses thats the trickiest part as you'll need to bleed the system.

It depends on what tools you have, what tools you need and how well you want to do the job. I have not done a 206 and it may be dead simple or else it may require tools such as a large hub nut socket (not in an average socket set) a brake piston rewind tool + adapter, an Ezibleeder etc. For that alone you are probably talking about 70-80 quid before you even buy parts or start the job. Also, if there is a hub nut have you a torque wrench with a high enough setting? Will you need to press wheel bearings into the rear discs, do you have the right tools for that.

If you're not sure about the above I'd be inclined to bring it to an indy garage having gotten a quote beforehand.

Just to add that fog lights actually do need to be focussed at times.

My advice to anybody thats unsure about working on their car is only do the work that you don't mind getting wrong. If I didn't know how to change brakes then I'd be very uneasy abput driving the car after I made an attempt at it.

Get another garage (not a chain outfit) to inspect discs and lines. Its quite likely that thediscs dont need to be changed. The fact that the dealer says they are still within wear limits says to me that they will be fine for another set of pads at least. Also it would be unusual to need front and rear discs at the same time.
If you only needed pads, that would be a nice diy job to start on. Discs, pads & brake lines would be pushing it alittle for a first timer.

Oh dont worry about that...i'll get herself to take it for a spin first :pac:

    In jest of course !!

To be honest i would be pretty comfortable doing it, i would have most of the tools except the torque wrench, but any excuse to buy more tools, one cant pass that down.

The 400 i save on the brakes can be spent on tools for the next job ;)

considering what you know on the prices etc why dont you get a few independant garages to give it the once over and price it up making sure they know you want an inspection and quotation, also dont forget to get your axel stands when changing the brakes last thing you want is the car to slip off plus it let you do both at the same time.

    Just a quick update.

I changed the front discs and pads this evening, took about 2.5 hours (with coffee and smoke breaks ;) ) will do the rear ones tomorrow.

When i returned from a short test drive i noticed a faint burning smell and some very light smoke from the rhs, i assume this is normal ? just bedding in ? I degressed the discs with "Muc" brake disc cleaning spray, would it have just been some residue burning off ?

Thanks again for all the help, the pads really were in a bad way !

    Hi oleras,
Welldone......just ensure not to go to hard on the brakes for the first 50miles or so as the brakes do need to be bedded in.
Don't forget the wind back tool for the back brakes...:)

Did you use disk cleaner on the disks first ? That burning smell is protective film of oil on the disk from delivery.

Very unlikely that theres an issue with the brake hoses, just probably needs a change of fluid if the pedal is soft.

Avoid any hard braking for around 300miles.
