I'm going to get in here before the Green Party and suggest that cyclists should be required to have lessons, a license and insurance, and also be compelled to wear reflective clothing, helmets and number plates- you know it makes sense!

    Benefits
    1. Road Safety
    2. Another Nice Earner For The Exchequer, going forward.
    3. Another quango would have to be created to oversee the implementation etc. etc. etc.
    4. We would look really good in the eyes of our continental cousins.
    5. The markets might like it.

Yes, and can we have mandatory:
    1. Helmets for motorists, their passengers and pedestrians
    2. High-vis for motorists, their passengers and pedestrians
    3. License and insurance for pedestrians / joggers / runners
    4. Number plates for pedestrians / joggers / runners

And while we're at it lets make its so drivers can't drive on their own without a license.

That may be overkill. Perhaps a small ad campaign by the Road Safety Authority mentioning that cyclists are also required to stop at red lights!

I would like every bicycle to be registered to an owner, might cut down on bike thefts and help with recovery of stolen bikes, aka my bike.

Maybe they should also run a few ads telling motorists that there is an offence called dangerous overtaking, that speed limits are not a choice, that the parking on footpaths and stopping on ped crossings / in yellow boxes is against the law. :o

Even better, manufactures could etch an unique number into the frame of each bicycle. ;)

there is already a number etched into most bicycles and that does not give any cyclist a shred of sense or decency when speeding through pedestrian crossings a few inches from me this morning, two cars stopped but the cyclist did not have to follow the same rules of the road it seems.

how about getting the Traffic Corps to do something other than just do speed traps? Like enforcing the law on the roads for instance... theres a new idea!

Yeah, and the same goes for motorists speeding up to make orange lights, breaking red lights, parking on footpaths, stopping in ped crossings and in advance stop boxes.

The rules for all need to be enforced, and there is no one group breaking them that really stands out.
