Surely they must be - I was waiting over 4 months for my appointment.

Only by virtue of probably having someone around to drive it to a centre on very short notice for a cancellation.

Our garage gives the NCT guys a €20 tip if they let a car in to do the test, go up and have a word with one of the lads. It should be no problem. A lot of car dealers do this.

Sometimes the NCT centre even rings garages asking do they want cars tested.

Go into a salesman that you may have purchased a car off and plead a simpathy case with him (under pressure from the law or something) and he may remember you the next time the come acalling.

The NCT isnt a civil service....its a robbing business

Best time to book your test is around 8.30 in the morning, they put up all the cancellations around that time.. I booked mine Friday for this Sunday. I had a wide range to choose from..

Can a salesman ring the nct on my behalf to speed things up?

No more than you can, if you're looking for a time that suits you. If you can take a cancellation you'll get one within days.

The entire point being made here is that dealers have easier access to *bringing* cars in for cancellations, and indeed getting cancellation slots easier cause they can get cars in to fill them.

This isn't like the driving test system of old where a letter from someone 'important' let you pick a closer slot that you wanted. If you phone the NCTS tomorrow morning and are flexible you'll get a date within a week, guaranteed.

Go to any large nct centre early on a working day and tell them you'll wait for a no show.(Bring your flask and sambos)

No big problem getting tests in Limerick these days. Logged on on Saturday and booked test for today, another for next Saturday, and a third for next week. There were slots available all day on 13th, 14th and 15th, any time you would want.

You could try NCT centres other than the closest one to you.

Dealers can sometimes get a car tested quickly by leaving the car (by arrangement) with the test centre for the day so that they can slot it in if it gets quiet / no shows.

I wouldn't recommend slipping a tip to the NCT staff, and I'd expect they would be in big trouble if found receiving one.

See, this is what I mean about waiting around. Will see what the dealer comes back with, he knows id like the car by the weekend, and hopes to put it through before that obviousely, and he is registering it on Thursday. If not can try for here, and see how long it takes here in West Cork!
