Today I noticed that that temp gauge in my punto has been going below half way when I take a sharp turn or it's idle and the heat is on.

Had the stat replaced this year. It's a punto 02.
    Any ideas

I'd say stat again to be honest.

Was thinking it was that again. Do you think I'll have too pay for a replacement one again

Probably, garage may reckon it's a faulty stat and if the factors / dealers they got it from agrees it may be free for the part. Batches of sh1te parts happen from time to time. May just be bad luck or may not be the stat either but I reckon it is, dropping temp gauge is generally the stat.

If not the thermostat the radiator is possibly at fault.

Common enough problem on cars of 10 years or older.

Airlock. Bleed the system and top up the coolant. Follow the correct procedure, bobs yure aunt.

well have too head over too the fiat forum. There is a sound of water inside the car when starting it up. Would this cause it.

Don't bother with the forum - theres two bleed screws, one on rad, one on heater feed hose - you need to top up with a hose jammed(sealed) into the filler lid to raise the head of water being forced in - open the rad screw first, when water flows out, close it and open the heater bleed screw - keep the water going into the filler, when it flows cleanly, no bubbles, close the bleed - fannys your uncle. Common Punto prob- leads to hot/cold spots and head gasket failure. Gives em a bad name it does. Giveaway is the sloshing noise, fluctuating needle, followed by clouds of white smoke and steam, given time and a heavy right foot. And the heater needs to be turned fully to hot when doing this, and by hose I mean a piece of pipe about 24" long, not the garden hose.

Sloshing would point to airlock :)

alot of modern cars, don't have any temp gauges ...why is that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

Is the filler got the max and min written on it. How do I keep the hose sealed in it and do I just keep putting water in it till it's clear

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

Yep - the max/min one. Get a bit of rubber hose(I use an old length of radiator top hose)that fits snugly. Fill the coolant/water mix into the hose and then bleed-keep the hose topped up to raise the head in the system - like a lot of modern cars the expansion vessel is too low to overcome the airlocks in the system without the filling point being raised. When you get clean/bubble free fluid coming out of the heater bleed screw(centre left behind head on tube going to heater matrix) you're good to go. Its a very common punto problem.

    Such as .......... ?

Ya know, them "no temp gauge" types:D
In fairness, a few just have a "warning, overheating light", but I can't think of any specific one at the mo.
By the way, thanks for your thanks Roverjames, its nice to be helpful, I hope Your problem gets sorted.....Oh no, hang on........:D

Would it not be easier too use a garden hose too fill it with water. Can I just not bleed the system first and then put in the right mixture

My sister drives a Ka, a 2001 model, no temp gauge on that, anyone know any others?

Yeah, I was going to say fords-they're so tight they would eliminate the windscreen if they thought you could manage with sunglasses.

Ka, C3 and Colt are all budget A to B wagons, reason they don't have one is as mentioned probably cost.

Scandalous.. Go to AAAutograss and get her one quick, a windscreen is a must.

Only if the driver just ignores it and drives on ahead. Generally, that is what my wife does, and it works for her. It works less well for me.

Often wondered why a few makes don't have temp guages, i'm
glad any car i've ever had has had one.
If the needle goes above half-way pull over before it gets worse.
Saved a few cars that've had.

nah can't be cost, a temp gauge would be a very basic thing to put in a car even cheapo makes of old had one

I'm far from sniffy dude, any regular readers here can testify to that ;) Many manufacturers of cars (and most other things these days) are continuously trying to cut costs. I firmly believe any car without a temp gauge is due to pure cost cutting.
