My sis is looking at a Rover 200 that the Spawell Motor Company in Templeogue is selling for 1,245 €

She needs a car this week (it is her first car) and she really likes this one, but I would just like to know if anybody here has had any experience buying from this bunch (positive or negative) before we hand over any cash.

    Thanks guys!

Not being funny but if it was my sister i would not encourage her to get a rover 200 as a first car. She would end up spending another €1,245 over the next few months on general up keep of it. Trust me, Rover 200's are pieces of sh*T, real pieces of sh*t..doesn't matter if it has an NCT...again...speaking from experience...

go for a corolla or someething realible

Rovers, like any other car, are fine as long as the proper maintenance is carried out and someone qualified checks the car out before purchasing.

ah yes, another _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (insert my fav word ;) ) that doesn't know what the temperature gauge is for. That's a bit much for a rover 200 though, lot's of Rover 25s about in that price range I would have though.

What did you spend €1250 on in terms of general up keep in a few months btw ? Sounds to me like you were sold a dud.

I'd go for a fiesta over a rover 200 any day tbh.

All due respects but don't expect to be getting a warranty at that price, not a bad car for the money but be prepared to do the headgasket in the near future, there's an improved gasket out that should sort the problem long term.

First of all, 90% of the Rover 200's are duds...My friend who does all the work on my cars has fixed endless head gaskets, clutch's, electrical gremlins, wheel bearings, Just a general rubbish car, straight from the horses mouth from a man who has fixed loads of them...

No problem, Happy to help. :)

Hopefully the OP's sister gets herself a proper car and not a heap of sh*t rover, would rather spend the money on bus fares than get caught driving one of them sheds...

She might get a Glanza, although the OP seems a respectable sort so maybe not ;)

Seems a bit expensive to me considering the Rover 200 was facelifted back in 1999/2000 and renamed the 25 making the 200 at least 10 years old

Here is a 2002 Rover 45 for slightly more money, looks tidy enough and has 18 months NCT on it:

I'd advise against buying a small/cheap rover - better off with a fiesta or carolla for that kinda money.
In terms of experience with the garage...when buying a car from a garage it's always best to check it with the thought in mind that there is no warrenty, even if there is one, buy the car over the sales man. Most items can be seen to be in a bad way visually. Personally I always check the air filter if I've been told the car's been serviced by the garage - dirty filter - walk away from the car, if they lie about the service there's a good chance they're lying about other stuff on the car too.

Missus has a 99 rover 200 that we have been waiting on to die......for 4 years.

Gets minimal maintenance and complete abuse. The head gasket failure rate is more down to owners not topping up the coolant regularly. The expansion tank and system capacity is small so any loss means a reduction in cooling. Only failure so far has been a coil which is possible on any 11yr old car (read VAG, BMW etc) - and I fixed it for 30quid. All in all it owes us nothing.

In fairness however they are an old design, they rust and and there's probably better buys for the money out there. We bought this one privately off a friend for 1200quid 4 years ago. You should be able to swing a micra or a Yaris for that money and that would be a better prospect for a learner/first car imo.
