Window Regulator on Citroen Xsara to DIY or not?

    hi all

new to this part of boards but have a query and thought ye may help please..

I've a 2003 Citroen Xsara Coupe 1.4L.. Electric front driver window got stuck halfway down yesterday, a bit of googling later and I find its probably the window regulator has had the cable jump off its tracks and perhaps chewed it a bit (a common problem?) so I opened up door this morn, found the cable is all over the place and not reeling in properly, so I disconnected motor (afterthought after I put door cover back on, is it safe enough to leave this disconnected?) and freed up the plastic holders for the window in order that i could at least push up the window closed and tape it in place.. (sneaking suspicion the first jolt will send it down though)

Question for anyone who may have experienced same or have knowledge of this problem... Am I better off buying a new window regulator and fitting myself? have found an online guide on how to do it so not too scared of trying it (If so, any thoughts on best place to purchase?)

or if I purchased the regulator is it best to get a mechanic to fit it? (would labour costs be high?)

or is a main dealer the best option? and if so, anyone have gone through this and have approx cost for it please?

    thanks in advance

Are you nifty with the tools in general, removing door panel and doing a window regulator can turn into an awful ball ache that you wish you never started.

I'm not too bad with em RJ if I'm honest and whilst I understand it could turn into a full day of kicking and cursing, if its a better option, than I'd do it rather than shell out several 100 euros.....

Couldn't see a decent independent garage charging more than €90 to fit a regulator. €90 well spent in my opinion and I'm not overly keen on paying folk to work on my cars.

ooh, well that sounds favourable... I had been thinking several times for some reason..

grand thanks RJ, as soon as I get out of this office I'll start making calls so..

The part could cost €150 though, or more, maybe less too, I don't have a clue to be honest.
