NCT emissions failure (test sheet attached)

    Hi all

My mother's car failed the NCT test quite badly on emissions (HC at idle of 851ppm - the test guy said that was the highest he'd ever seen so I'm quite proud :D). the strange thing is that at the high-rev test the HC was fine . She was planning to buy a new car anyway and has since bought a new car so it's not particularly urgent to get this sorted.

The NCT-failure Saxo is currently languishing in our driveway. I'd like to sort out the emissions and use it as a beater for the run to the train station so I'm seeking the advice of knowledgable boardsies as to what action to take.

The car was serviced every 9k miles and is running great. It's not using any more petrol than normal. Seeing as high HC means that unburnt fuel is exiting the exhaust, I plan to change the following parts:
    • Plugs (last done 3 years ago, so due a change)
    • air filter (done recently but might as well change it again)
    • O2 sensor (I'm told this is a common failure on these at arund 100k miles)
    • coolant temp sensor (I hear that a faulty sensor could lead the car to believe it's cold all the time and thus overfuel)

I'm just hoping that the overfuelling (if that is the case) hasn't done in the cat. The cat itself should be ok as it was changed at 70k miles for the last test. They mentioned on the test sheet that the exhaust was leaking which I plan to have fixed but the test guy reckoned that wasn't the cause for the high HC.

Anyway, i'd be grateful for any advice or if I'm missing something obvious here.

    Cheers!
