I know its a bit away but if this doesnt work out Im off to the states for the summer!

Basically Im a 3rd year mechanical enginnering student and I want to work next summer in something related to engineering. Im not too fussy in what area. Could anyone advise me as to how I should go about this? Is it just a case of sending out numerous CVs and hoping for the best? Or is there even firms that would take me on?

Any help/advise or previous experience would be much appriciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Contact your lecturers about contacts they might have. Have any family members working in the area? Ask them if they know of any opportunities. Otherwise send out CVs.

I don't know how likely it is that you'll be paid (I know two guys who came in for experience where I am either got nothing or very little pay) so keep that in mind.

It might be worth heading abroad first to make contacts and second to get some good experience abroad.

First project that comes to mind would be the Limerick Tunnel, only opened recently and I'm sure would have taken on their share of people. Perhaps contact them soon about summer work? They probably won't be able to commit but worth giving it a shot as there's probably a good bit of snagging work going on.

I finished my mechanical engineering degree this summer. I would recommend that you consider applying to iaeste. I did, this year and now I am in Japan in a paid traineeship with a engineering company.

Cheers for the replies. Im going to ask a few of my lecturers if they have any contacts.

IAESTE looks like a good organisation, I never heard of it before. Do they gaurantee placements if you apply??
