    Hey :)

I don't post here much/at all, but I need some advice and figured this would be the best place.

I'm turning 18 in three days, and my party is next week, I bought a dress, but it's kind of plain

Sorry the picture is so small, couldn't find a bigger one!

It has like black jewels on the one strap.

I want to make it more, colourful, or even just a bit more exciting like, because my shoes are black too, so I'll look kind of plain :(

    Anyone have any suggestions? :)

It is really that short? Or is it truncated in the photo?

It's quite short yes, but it's the only dress that looked even some what nice on me tbh, so I didn't care

Do you have budget for shoes, or are you committed with the black ones you mentioned? What tights are you thinking about wearing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭OopsyDaisy

I don't really have money to get new shoes, plus the black ones I have are reeeeaally comfortable for some unknown reason :P

Well, I wasn't going to wear tights, because I didn't know what colour would go, and if I wore black, it'd be too much black, you know?

If you were to add something to the dress, it might take from the overall style. Its already embellished with jewels, big shiny black ones.

Black dresses are classy, they dont need anything else attached. However if you did want to add colour to your overall look, I would ask a dressmaker for advice. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing - its lovely, I like short dresses myself, my legs are one of my best features, and obviously one of your best features too since you chose a short one!

If you are adamant about adding colour, I suggest you get another dress and keep your lovely black one for another occasion, you will get plenty of wear out of it at Christmas.

Good luck, and enjoy yourself whatever you decide!:D

In my opinion, tights are a neccessity with a short dress like that. I think black, or patterned black would be best. Bare legs in an Irish winter is not attractive. And because you will have a bit of flesh showing on top, I'd keep the bottom a little covered.

Like the previous poster said, I don't think I'd try to add colour to the dress. The embellishment on the shoulder, plus the fact that it's one-shouldered will be more than enough. Sometimes, a single colour has more impact than if you added colour.

Perhaps some silver bangles with a silver purse (or any colour you would like) would give the colour you'd like.

Have a great night - and a happy birthday :)

I'd agree with Dudara and the other posters about not adding colour to the dress, especially witht the embellishing. However, as D already mentioned, you could try 'brighten' the outfit with acessories. I like the idea of silver bangles and purse, and you could look at something similar for a necklace, too, if you tend to wear one, but if wearing bangles and large bracelets, I'd be careful not to overdo it too much with a necklace and earings.

You could always take a look in Penneys or Dunnes for a not so expensive pair of shoes which might work with your dress.

well, i wouldn't add anything, apart from maybe a chunky bangle or something...

however, if you were looking for something to break up the colour, how about some statement earrings? or a nice hairband? like one of those feather ones, or topshop had some really cute little top hat thingy's that are super cute.

don't know if their still in stock tho!

Sorry Purple_Bobbin, I couldn't find the dress on the website, I had to just google search in images to find it, luckily it was there

It's from Jane Norman though :) Hope that helps

I think you'd be grand with bare legs, Oopsy. And as for adding colour, paint your nails a really pretty colour! :)

Every young one out last night was wearing just about ass-length black dresses, bare legs and heels (quite a few couldn't quite walk in them - always a classy look). To be perfectly honest it looked cheap. But perhaps we are just too old to understand. That said OP, tights would probably help you stand out from the crowd of tango legs a little, which is surely what you want on your birthday?

Penneys had silver hairbands with black stones that might go well to pick up the shoulder, especially if you go with silver bangles. Given the fabric, the pleating and the embellished shoulder, adding a colour (rather than a metal) might overdo the look rather than accessorise the dress. But at 18 you can to an extent get away with anything! Enjoy your party.

I think a fun hair band/piece would look great like the last poster said..

In Penneys theres a pair of teal stilettos .. they were on expose I think. They would add all the colour needed. . for 19euro! :)

If you really want to stick with black shoes, paint the finger & toe nails same colour, add a hair band and maybe a colourful bangle? Maybe purple, hot pink?

bright nails and maybe a statement clutch bag?

I think it will be fab without tights. I hate them and only wear them if its freezing out!

Re jewellery you could try a cuff on one wrist and some earrings. Personally I think it would look great with that and black shoes but then I love black!

    Maybe a nice hair piece?
I've been seeing a lot clips with fake flowers on them, they'd look really nice if you're into that stuff.
Oh and I think you'll look alright without tights. :)
