Ok guys was in the process of stalking up on a nice red pricket which suddenly got spooked and scarpered. I knew he hadnt seen me or got wind of me so was a bit miffed. That was until my friend who had been waiting back in the next field told me a fella dressed head to toe in camo sporting a compound bow had come strolling downwind of the animals right across the middle of the field
He came to within 40 yds of my friend who made his prescence known by walkling out from the undergrowth and saying "morning" at wich point the chap did a swift 90dergree turn and heade off away from us at an increased pace !! I saw none of this as I was in next field. by time I heard bout him he was nowhere to be seen, but did glimpse hime few hours late long way off when I saw some hinds running for cover long ways off.We are the only people who have permision there and no-one else from our group was there that morning so have no idea who he was, so clearly a poacher ? But am I right that you are not allowed hunt game with a bow....?

Yeah I cant open it either. Couldnt believe it myself, thought my mate was winding me up to be honest. What really pissed me off was that I'd been stalking the stag for nearly 30 mins waiting for a shot !!

Can anyone prove that vermin cannot be despatched by an arrow...

I know full well that game is a no no..
Dont know where I saw it was a long time ago also I inquired as I was once interested in hunting with a bow but it is strictly a no no for any type of hunting

Was the nod a "nod", or did you get that nod written down and signed?

I get the "nod" suggested a lot of times when I ask after stuff, but I wouldn't like to rely on it.

    Here you go lads!

Section 34 of the Wildlife Act 1976. There's the source. The bit you're interested in is the following:
34.—(1) Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act apart from this section but subject to section 42, a person shall not—
( a ) hunt any wild bird or wild mammal by means of a trap, snare, net, line, hook, arrow, dart, spear or similar device, instrument or missile, or birdlime or any substance of a like nature, or any poisonous, poisoned or stupefying bait

It's a pain in the hole. I searched through the principal act, which I got from Conor's thread full of hunting law.

Im not willing to give out names but I made a call to my Shooting insurance company and they looked into it for me...said I was fine to shoot rabbit and foxes....
The bow itself I brought back from the US..
Obviously the correct heads must be used to make a quick humane kill..

A 400 gn carbon fiber arrow at 300 fps with the right head is instant lights out for any rabbit..

Sir, your insurance shooting company is not the law and justice system of the Republic of Ireland.

Your insurance shooting company IS required to provide you with advice in accordance with the law.

Right now you have dangerously misinformed, as you can see by the post above, and told that you may break the law.

It needs for you to get it sorted out - quickly.

No doubt we'll get the hand-wringers here any minute now.

    Discharge a:p gun

Ah, but you can also 'discharge' an arrow. From Old French 'decharger' - to unload, as in the discharge a boat et al.

It is a great pity that is illegal here,as I would consider it more difficult and skillful,[after only trying it once in the New World many years ago] to actually do than hunting with a rifle.

I personally wouldnt like to see bows legal for hunting here-as you say it is far more difficult to humainly kill any animal in comparison to a rifle :(

Those judo points are fine as long as you're shooting over ground that is as bald as a newborn's arse - but stick one little blade of grass between you and said bunny and see what happens when those little wire arms grab it!:D:p

Rabbits aren't that sturdy - a normal target point will put them down for good almost instantly when shot from a modern high-speed compound.

If it was legal here that is!:P:eek:

You don’t shoot a bow, you ‘loose’ an arrow.

You fire a gun, after which it is in a ‘discharged’ state. Fire, becausein the old days you brought the match to the touch-hole.
Dis – is from Latin, meaning away or apart (e.g. disbelief, disallow) Charge is from Latin carricare, to load, and is connected with cart, car, carriage, etc.
    Pedantic about semantics..;)

Seriously lad..do you think this hitting a bunny at 20-30 yds at around 250-300 fps at a overall weight of 400grain would not be humane?
It's not so much whether a clean hit is going to be humane as whether or not a clean hit is going to be the normal outcome; and it's just not going to be, because people will miss more often. And frankly, nailing a bunny to the ground by it's rear leg isn't humane, it's only a step shy of abuse.

However, we're rapidly heading towards the area of discussing how to bowhunt here, which is illegal and not on, so let's steer away from that area please. Bad enough that we've had to ban one user off the site for that in the last year.

But then if you are a TRUE HUNTER you will recognise the limits of your skill and kit ,be it rifle or bow and not take the shot.Anything else is just then "buck fever"Again,I am talking from a moralistic viewpoint which is personal and subjective.

so is a Larsen trap illegal then?

No, because it's illegal to hunt any and all wild birds by any means except those covered by derogation; and the derogation specifies what can be used to hunt them and overrides that section of the Act.
