Knackered injectors? Knackered diesel pump? Knackered rings? I would start with the injectors and work from there. Is the car smoky? Have you changed the air filter lately? Not sure what the MAF set up is on your car, but that could be a culprit. If it was me, I would do air-filter, Injector overhaul, Maf, in that order. Or else buy somthing more economical.:)

Unless its electing a pope, the valve stem oil seals are probably gone, but unlikly to affect fuel consumption. Most likly the motors bett and they tend to be a pricey fix. I'm actually predjudiced against these ford 1.8 diesels anyway as I have never had any luck with them and any that have broken on me(and I've had a fair few in couriers, escort vans and mondeo cars) have proven to be a pain to repair. They seem to be made of crap metal and are finnicky as feck. If the timing belt doesn't break, the diesel pump messes up, or else the head gasket goes. You might be better getting a heads up from one of the more technical types who likes these motors. In my experience of them, the repair bill usually exceeds the value of the rusty body they are in.

Sound Tommy-i had the same issue with my last mondeo, got an estimate on repairs and it was mad, even going down the "local mechanic" route. It was cheaper to go out and buy another running car.

The problem with your car is either

    (a) an air leak into the fuel system. You can test this by working the hand primer on top of the fuel filter before your start the car. (The primers themselves crack and let air in ;) )

    or

    (b) there is a problem with a glow plug or two, or the glow plug circuit. You will need a multimeter to check the circuit is being powered up, and then the plugs continuity individually if the power is there. If you are replacing the plugs, do not go for a "cheapie" brand as you will be replacing them again in another few weeks.

Despite opinions here in this thread, it think it's highly unlikely that this is an injector fault. This will usually cause noisy running with black smoke, rather than lumpy running and cutting out. Ditto for valve stem seals, as this will cause oily / blue smoke and an oil consumption problem, and not cutting out or lumpy running. Incidentally, any of those Endura diesels I've worked on never had valve stem seal issues.
