Advice needed: Changing Audi A4 for E46 3 Series

I am driving a 00 Audi A4 B5 1.8 Petrol with 120k miles. It's well looked after, reliable and is low maintenance. Performance wise it's sufficient but a few dozen bhp short of exciting.

I have my eye on a 00 E46 325i BMW with similar mileage. It seems to be well cared for too. It is far more enjoyable to drive, with 70 extra bhp, nicer handling and also a leather interior.

The price difference between what I think I can sell the Audi for and what I can get the BMW for is fairly low. My question is whether or not this is a good idea. I have heard that BMWs can be costly to maintain. Is this a myth or would it really come with large extra hidden costs? I'm interested in hearing from any BMW enthusiasts to hear your opinions, and what to look out for in particular if I do go ahead to consider the 3 series more seriously.

    Thanks

Check the cooling system in the BMW. These engines are fine, but the cooling system is delicate and sensitive. My one let me down on that. Thermostat with housing (plastic!), water pump, belt, viscous fan clutch, coolant, etc. should be checked and replaced if needed.
    Good Luck.

^ above advice re cooling is spot on and should be done if there is no evidence of it. E46 is sturdy, the first 3 series to be built to 5 series standards (by BMW's own admission), and if it has a FSH then with a thorough inspection you will have a fine car. Parts are readily available via Otto and the like and a fraction of main dealer prices.
