My daughters key for her 00 Nissan Micra has worn down (teeth) and wont turn in the ignition, She's useing her spare key its the 2 button transponder NATS I think. I rang our local Nissan dealer and was quoted approx €230!!! Corthers in Walkinstown was €210 approx. Has anyone had to replace the same item and got it cheaper or Im willing to drive up the north to a Nissan dealer up there get it done or would that be a problem doing that.

im guessing it has a immobilizer built into the key..
try a decent locksmith. they should be a lot cheaper..
maybe try ebay for a key also

Thanks Sean, Yes it has an immobilizer and buttons for the central locking, which need to be programmed which for some strange reason is a rip off IMHO :D

ya it can be a rip off from the main dealers anyway. when i needed a second key for my vw i bought one on ebay with a blank blade and immobilizer. i then got it cut and programed in the local locksmiths for 80 quid! new one from vw was over 300!!! but you should have this from your old key. im not 100% sure about the nissans but on the vw you the chip is easy to move from one key to another. is this the type of key you need??
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-MICRA-PRIMERA-X-TRAIL-NAVARA-ETC-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-/160487379677?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item255dcb12dd if it was, going by what the seller says you could swap over the internals from your old key get the blade cut to match (should only cost 10-20 euro in a lock smith) and you would be set..

As far as I know the buttons part clicks off.

With your own key I'm not sure if the immobiliser chip is on the blade or on the buttons part

Thanks guys, Ive dismantled the old key and the transponder and immobizer are all transferable. So ive bought the blank key from ebay for €16 and I'll let you know how I get on as soon as it arrives and get it cut and "rebuilt". Worst is that im only down €16 plus the cost of getting it cut. Thanks again guys :)

You can then remove the coloured chip that is in the half with your worn down blade and fit that to your new key as it is already coded to you car already.

What you will need is a key cutting number that you can only get from a dealer.

When that key comes from Ebay, ensure that the profiles are the same. ie. shoulder height with of blade etc.

Thanks ks652, I taught I could get it cut in a normal place that does keys? Can you tell me what a "key cut number" is and roughly how much it would be?

I read the OP again. Are you using a spare key? is this worn down at all? If not then the locksmith can cut the new blade from the profile on the spare.

If this isnt the case then you will need to go to you dealer to request the cutting code. You will need formal id. Licence and logbook

She is using the spare key which is new, the company gave it to her as a spare so thats the one we are going to get the profile from. So I think we are ok with it thanks again
