A no NCT, tax and insurance question

    Hello,
I bought a car a few months earlier this year for cheap. I could'nt afford to insure it at the time. However, the NCT has expired since July 2010, and the tax is due for renewal this month.
The thing is I can afford to pay the insurance, but I cant get a quote unless i have valid NCT cert. Also I cant renew my tax as I don't have insurance!
I have the NCT test due soon, but if I could get someone to drive the car who is covered to drive other car would this be ok?
What is my best solution here?

You mean you need to get the car to the NCT centre?
Some people have policies that cover them to drive other cars once the other car is also insured by its owner.
Others have policies that allow them to drive other cars without any insurance on the other car.
You need to be very careful here. Whoever is to drive it would need to be 100% sure of the terms of their policy given that you have no insurance in force.

You could always change insurance onto this car for the day of the test if you have another car or even someone in you family could do this. I cant see the insurers looking for NCT for a temporary transfer like that.

when push comes to shove, you don't need an NCT cert to insure a car. Get back on the phone and ask them to cover you and tell them the situation. You will get third party but you will not be covered for fire and theft (i had this conversation with my own ins company).
This of course will vary between companies but it is not a law. Insurance company's tend to make up a lot of sh1t.
