  • Being 3.5" doesn't that mean it'll need a power source and must be plugged in? Not really portable then.

Got a WD Elements 1TB in Tesco the other day for €77, haven't loaded it up yet.

Yes on both counts but great for additional storage. Would be even better with an Ethernet port for network connection!

Ah FFS! I read the title and noticed portable and assumed it was 2.5" self powered.
My father always told me to never assume.....

    For €115 I got a 1.5TB off Amazon.co.uk. Plus remember a 1 Bit = 1024 bytes.

It is a bit of a trouble, but legally they can give, for example this product "1TB" even though it is "800GB" in actual size.

Should be about ~930GB for 1TB

Great for anyone with an Aldi Medion PC, which have a docking port on the top of them for it (all their previous Hardrives did anyway)

Speaking of which, what do people think of the latest offer?

€449.99 in store instead of €499.99 on the Medion site - that's gotta be a first!

OP, why did you use the word 'Portable' instead of 'External' in your first post?
Surely you would have known that the 'portable' part would be misleading

Yes it is' portable' but would need the power supply brick to use it wherever you bring it.

Honest mistake no doubt. Anyone that takes the time to post anything here should be given the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the OP can go back to his post, select "Go Advanced" and remove the "portable" bit?

    Fixed it for you ;)

Sorry for misleading people but it does not say that its not portable, likewise it does'nt say it is either. It looked like a portable Hardrive

Easons doing 1tb (plugged in etc.) for €79 in two different brands including iomega. So no that price is not good! Mine has not given any trouble so far, great piece of kit if your not worried about it being portable.

Not a good price. I ordered a 2Tb one from Dabs for €133 (incl. P&P) yesterday.

2 TB Western Digital @ Amazon for approximately 110 euro. It's free shipping as usual with the usual 2 years warranty.

Dabs have a 3.5" 1TB one for around €58 :) Ordered one earlier, yeah €90 seems a bit expensive for this.

  • What about a portable 2.5" hd....are there any good deals on these going around? Would I be right that you can't get a 1TB 2.5" ?

If you want to be pedantic. Both 2.5" and 3.5" drives can be external and portable.

The phrase you are looking for is bus powered. In general only 2.5" drives (and smaller) are bus powered.

    From urban dictionay:
Lemonparty: 1. A nice little orgy involving three older, overweight men with flacid penises. 2. The most pleasureable thing you will ever see! 3./url]
    1. Click link
    2. Feel foolish
    3. Claim you didn't click ought
    4. Divert attention by burning harrowing mental image into people's consciousness that will stay with them forever and cause widespread male impotence

As regards portable devices, this seems a pretty good deal for a 2.5" 1 TB

    Are you drunk?

    8 bits = 1 byte.

Your computer interacts with the hard disk using binary measurements. Therefore:
    1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB and 1 TB = 1024 GB (ie 1 binary TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes)

Hard Disk manufacturers advertise their disk sizes using decimal measurements Therefore:
    1KB = 1000 bytes, 1 MB = 1000 KB, 1 GB = 1000 MB and 1TB = 1000GB (ie 1 decimal TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes)

In other words, disk advertised as 1 TB is only approx 931.51 GB. This is standard.

Outer branding for external Hard Drives from Medion isn't what you want. Finding out the manufacturer of the Hard Drive inside is what you need.

Western Digital is what I like personally. Maxtor are okay too, though tend to run with a bit more heat. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Toshiba either (Lacie use these in their external cases occasionally). I avoid Seagate.

Any reason behind avoiding seagate?? bcoz maplin is doing the 1gb for 79.99 and i might be thinking on getting one

Seagate had 'quality' issues when they moved manufacturing to mainland China.. A run of dodgy drives popped up and were sold at low prices, including Maplins. End buyer stung, as usual.

If you loiter on Amazon and places where buyers leave feedback, there's an unusual amount of annoyed Seagate users out there. The external drives seem to die sooner than other brands.

    No it's not, 1 bit = 1/8 of a byte (8 bits in a byte).

    I think you mean 1kbit = 1024 bits.

In fairness to the Medion drives they do have an eSata port which means they can run at the same speed as an internal drive (3 Gb/s as opposed to 480Mb/s for USB2). Sata to esata cables can be got for a couple of euros in Peats.

I bought 3 of the older 640 GB Medions a couple of years ago and they are still going strong. Might pick one of these up if they are still there.
