    Hey everyone,

In an effort to extend my network (I'm on Airport Extreme and tried to set up Airport Express to get the net upstairs), I ruined my settings. Contacted my ISP and I've fixed everything - I can get the net on my ethernet but not my airport extreme.

Disregard the airport express - i haven't done anything with it. Its unplugged and not connected and not considered below.

    What should I do?

    My Ethernet settings:
    IP Address: 87.192.100.23a
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.b
    Router: 87.192.100.19a
    DNS: 62.231.32.10, 62.231.32.11

    But on airport extreme:
    IP Address: 87.192.100.23a
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.b
    Router: 87.192.100.19a
    DNS: 62.231.32.10, 62.231.32.11

    Ping:
IP Address: 87.192.100.23a - no issues
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.b - 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
    Router: 87.192.100.19a - 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
    DNS: 62.231.32.10, 62.231.32.11 - 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss

Thanks guys - really need your help. Started back at college and this is really stressing me.

    Ni Niall,

Thanks for your e-mail. I was conscious of putting in IP addresses as I thought it wouldn;t be appropriate on the forum - didn't even know protecting the DNS was paranoid - is the above a bit better. As for the airport - its the extreme. Haven't used the express and its not connected to anything.

Is the airport the card in the same mac?
Everything was working up until Wednesday.

Do you have the latest version of the airport extreme configuration utility?
    Yep

Did your ISP specifically ask you to set the address you have on the express
Yep, I had to call to ask - there was different configurations coming up for me on the extreme when i set it up but i modified it on advice from the ISP

Did support at your ISP aim to just get you connected again,
or help you configure the specific scenario involving the airport express?
Just connected - it took ages to get through so i thought i'd try the forums. Nothing on support documentation from the website with respect to mac

    Thanks again.

    Hi.
you need to put in a bit more detail here.
I understand completely your fear of putting your full IP address in (though masking the DNS servers is a little paranoid!), but you need to let us see where possible conflicts lie.

Let's say for example your Airport Extreme is 87.192.a.a, use that address for everywhere that comes up in your report.

If the Airport express uses a different IP address, it could be 87.192.a.b,
your router 87.192.a.c and so on.
We need to see where the addresses go.

For a start, you give an address for 'airport', but it's not clear whether that
is an address set on a mac airport interface, or the airport express.
When you say 'ping' - ping what? you need to put in e.g. 'ping 87.192.a.a' or whatever you're using.
    At the very least try
    ping (IP of airport extreme)
    ping (IP of airport express)
    ping (IP of router)
ping 66.249.92.104 (An address for google.ie - in case your DNS isn't working)

Is the airport the card in the same mac?
Are you trying to share the network connection from a computer downstairs to one upstairs, or just trying to move the same machine?
Do you have the latest version of the airport extreme configuration utility?
Did your ISP specifically ask you to set the address you have on the express,
or did you base it on the one set for your ethernet (or airport).
Did support at your ISP aim to just get you connected again,
or help you configure the specific scenario involving the airport express?

I'm curious to see what's going on here.
I'm away a lot this weekend, but I'll keep an eye out.
The more detail you put up, the more people will be able to help you.
    Good luck!

I suppose the obvious questions are:

What make/model is the wireless router you are trying to connect to ?

Have you connected to it and provided the wireless security key ?

Are you using WEP or WPA/WPA2 security in the router ?

Setting the Airport to use DHCP is the obvious first step in obtaining an i.p. address that's within your networks range. Do this and let us know what i.p. address it provides.

What model Mac are you using by the way and what version of OS X ?

As Niall said, the more info you provide the better the help you'll get here.

    Ken

    Hey thanks for the e-mail.

Everything worked fine up until 2 days ago when I tried to extend the network and I changed all settings. In fact my ethernet direct to my laptop didn't work.

I rung IBB for the correct settings and can now use the ethernet directly into the laptop.

As for the extreme, its the n model, macbook pro 2gh intel core duo, OS X 10.4.6 - so its all up to date.

I can connect to the extreme but I can't access the internet. I think its down to the settings. The settings that are working for the ethernet cable aren't working for the airport.

I don;t use DCHP as its a static IP address.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again for the e-mail.

You need to differentiate between your Mac's Airport settings and the Airport Extreme Base Station settings. "Airport Extreme" implies the base station, when I assume you are actually talking about your Mac's Airport settings.

Anyway, you can't use the same static IP address for both Airport and Ethernet at the same time - it causes an IP conflict. Change the IP of the Airport. Or better yet, just turn on DHCP.

I suppose telling you I love you is a bit strong - but I mean it. Life saver.

If I could be cheeky and ask you another stupid question - and it is really stupid - the original reason that I buggered my settings is that I was trying to extend the network and didn't do a very good job of it.

I also have an airport express - I know I have to allow the airport extreme to extend the network - but do i have to have the airport express hooked up to the cable dsl by an ethernet cable or is it that the wireless capability of the express can extend the wireless capability of the extreme (which is hooked up to the internet)

My extreme is downstairs - cant get signal upstairs and in my naivety I think i can plug my express in upstairs and that will extend the network in itself without the need to plug an ethernet into the express

I really do appreciate your help.

    Thanks again

You need to set up your network to use WDS. It's fairly straight-forward to do.

Have a look at this guide here:
