If you are single then you get a credit of up to €400. That is based on rents of a maximum of €2000 relieved at the basic tax rate of 20%.

If you're married or widowed then the maximum tax credit is €800.

If you're over 55 then the maximum tax credit is €800 for a single person and €1600 for a married couple or a widowed person.

You get tax credits if the claim is for the current year, and refunds for previous years, as long as your affairs are in order for those years.

I've been living in private rented accomodation for 5 years, while paying tax (I have a full time job). I claimed for rent relief for the 1st year back in the day (year one let's call it).

Can I claim for the last 4 years too or does it automatically apply itself to your tax credits?

If I understand correctly it's about 360 per year? I got 360 for the first year and nothing after that, but did they just apply the relief to my tax credits?

AFAIK, you are able to claim for those four years.

You need to check your tax credit certificate and see if it is already there.
