    Think you're looking at coredumps on a quiet well resourced machine.
    They might be well stored sparse files, and maybe du is honestly telling you how many blocks they're really using?
    What kind of filesystem is mfe on ?
    What generated the dumps?
    'file core*' will probably tell you if you haven't already run it.

    Oh du was telling the truth alright. That partition was only 30G in size. ext3. I'll have to google this sparse file business you're talking about.

    Yeah, they're core files on a box in the oifig. It's fairly high end alright. The process should have been using about 7G of ram when the core happened, so I wasn't surprised at the core size, just that it wasn't actually that size.
