Just saw it on the news, read on the Journal he's a veggie.

"Mr Ciolos said direct payments had to be backed up by a strong package of market measures to avoid volatility in prices and farm incomes."

I sort of like the sound of that, the devil will be in the details.

They said on the news, regarding the "fairer" distribution of payments that Ireland would not necessarily suffer. I call BS on that here & now.

What way do people think it will go?

On a per acre basis? or something completly different?

Would there be different rates for an acre of dairy, an acre of sheep, tillage etc?

What did they mean in the article I wonder about "Active farmers"? They are hardly going to take away from the part time farmer. That be a sickener as alot of the smaller farmers have to do something else on the side.

also that the payments go to active farmers

I think an active farmer is one actually doing the work and posting tax returns. Cash only boys need not apply. I reckon it will end up flat rate but different rates eg disadvantaged v non disadvantaged. There will have to be a phase in period too. And i too would like a cap but at what level? 100k? Larry et al would just split into different companies to maximise their payment and we end up the same rate overall

Thanks for that, well we pay taxes alright so might be ok. I am fully with ya on the Larry G thing as in him splitting into different sections and such. Always a way for them to maximize whereas the small to medium lads always get screwed.

Indeed - its about time the small man got a fairer cut, too much is going to the beef and barley barons as well as absentee landlord types:mad:

When they say active farmers that would be full time and part time farmers - not people with land doing nothing with it but collecting payments on it.

I would like a tiered system and for it to be paid as a fixed rate per acre.
Start off with higher payments for a fixed amount of land, then reduce it for the next level and cap it at a certain acreage/hectare level.

We don't need large scale farmers getting large scale payments. I mean the smaller farmer who puts the work in shouldn't be seen as a lesser farmer for having smaller scale. The current system seems designed to keep the smaller farmer down, while the bigger farmer gets more which helps him/her to grow their farm business faster than the smaller farmer.

There needs to be a redistribution of the money in a fairer manner. Forget the historical method of deciding who gets what - people were farming for subsidies back then and some did it much better than others.

We don't need certain farmers or businesses getting obscene amounts of money while we have other farmers getting a measley amount, we need to secure every farm job at this time.

I am sure a fairer distribution of the CAP money would lead to more job creation as it would allow farmers who weren't getting enough to invest more back into their farms, improve farms and it would lead to increased food exports for the economy.

I just hope for a fairer system for all.

One thing for sure is that the armchair Farmers days are over and that's no harm either. I've seen it around me where lads are only keeping the minimum amount of cattle just so they can draw the entitlements etc. This system made it impossible to get a bit of land to rent especially for young farmers starting out.
I think there's going to be some kind of link to production and more than likely the Suckler Welfare Scheme will be part of it.

"The EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development has said in Dublin that payments to farmers throughout Europe must be more fairly distributed among member states."

Any idea what sort of rates other EU countries are getting ? and is the whole of the EU payments getting reviewed in 2013 ?

I think we are among the biggest recipients pr capita and the last 10 accession states getting relatively little. I think we can expect a decrease but how much is up in the air
