what did you restore to?check settings general about

    firmware version and baseband.

5.14.02 means thats goodbye unlock for a while.

you're saying you have ultrasnow installed again. im assuming you restored to 4.0.1 again and jailbroke already?

yep and thats why its annoying me, Im on 4.0.1 and Im jailbroken but it just wont unlock or at least its not picking up my sim, Ive tried 2 meteor sims already mine and a friends, the "carrier" option seems to be disapearing and reapearing every so often

The OP is referring to an iPhone 4 so any reference to 5.14.02 is irrelevant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭irishglass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

well then there ya go, 4.1 upgrades the baseband, ya should of restored to 4.0.1
download the ipsw, edit the hosts file and hold shift and restore in itunes

all that is no good to you now though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭irishglass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

no ya didnt, ya restored to 4.1 and then downgraded to 4.0.1
there is no way to unlock it at the moment unless ya can get the carrier to do it

the only reason you can't unlock is you somehow upgraded baseband version, the latest versions are usually unlockable. When you upgrade the easy way (click to restore) or from unpatched ipsw you end up with upgraded ios AND baseband fw. If you say you can go from 4.1 to 4.0.x I think you used TinyUmbrella and have (maybe accidentally) saved SHSH blobs either locally or on Cydia server, otherwise I don't see this possible.

If you install UltraSnow, from Cydia and it says 'unsupported' you CAN NOT unlock (phones with latest baseband version). These details are related to 3rd gen phones, but I'd say 4 is something similar but baseband version has different numbers. I am on the same boat, bought 3Gs with latest BB fw so unlock's impossible. Good news is, an exploit has been found. It might be available to use with UltraSnow (probably 1.1-2 ver or something) just 1-2 days after official 4.2 release, which is most likely to be Today or Tomorrow. So I'd say I have my 3Gs unlocked by next Wednesday. iPhone4 will hopefully follow the same way at the same time, might be delayed few days.

    For everyone playing with up/down-grading,
    * save your SHSH before you start / it's too late.
    * upgrade from file - 'patched' ipsw which preserver current (unlocked) baseband

Fact of the matter is that you are all wrong.

Yes when it comes to the iPhone 3g and 3gs, you can not downgrade the baseband, BUT and this is a bit but, the iPhone 4's bootrom exploit can let you downgrade the baseband, but only if you used Umbrella version 4.1.5 or later. This version allowed you to store both the main firmware and the baseband firmware shsh's.

The OP said that he restored to 4.0.1, however he should try to restore in DFU mode back to 4.0.2 and then use limera1n to jailbreak. This way his bb might downgrade, but unless he knew what he was doing in the first place, he is probably screwed.

the *only* way to update your iOS without updating your baseband is to either create a custom ipsw with pwnagetool, or use TinyUmbrella (just download TinyUmbrella, click "save SHSH" let it finish, click "Start TSS Server" and then restore with iTunes).

Using TinyUmbrella, of course, assumes you have your SHSH blobs saved for the relevant firmware

You are wrong unfortunately, you can *never* downgrade baseband. Well, there is an exception with very early 3G models, but they are rare.

that's what I mentioned above, also the ipsw can either be "home made" by yourself or "baked" (customized) by someone else. I did upgrade an ipsw file I downloaded, this promised to be an upgrade preserving BB version (by my experience, good software for this is SnowBreeze).

There's no need to downgrade BB, new Ultrasnow is out there in few days which will help to unlock all 3rd gen iPhones and I believe this will either work for most of iP4 BB version right away or will do after some more testing. This might take few more days, however people from dev.community confirmed successful unlock for 'some' iP4 with new Ultrasnow, for the rest who won't be so lucky just keep checking news and I hope the unlock issue for all iP4 will get resolved by the end of November.

Just a side note, chpwn and some other members of the dev team strongly advise against using sn0wbreeze as it is made by a very inexperienced developer who just puts a GUI on the existing (command-line) tool xpwn.

It is advised to use pwnagetool, however it is mac only. Apparently chpwn is working on a windows version of pwnagetool, though.

well, I have both Mac and PC and also most of the apps for jailbreaking and unlocking and I am not a developer so won't tell you which one is more secure or less buggy. I did not find any issue with the tool, neither other people did from wat I've read. And you know how it's about dev teams, everyone want to be the first and the best which is good, indeed. Little bit of competition always helps to accelerate things. If there're a serious security holes in his code or anything people would already know about it. But that's just my opinion, it's not really important how to make it done but if the final product is satisfying. I am satisfied and for everyone who would like to create his own custom (iOS) ipsw, there are many tools on the web, just do your research... and use the one which suits you best

PS: just don't forget to save your SHSH blobs, before it's too late 8-) .. otherwise you can end up with un-unlockable baseband for long time. And you don't want to turn your iPhone into an iPod

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭GhanGee

for that kind of money I'd have a new phone, re-think and spend it for something else.

    new UntraSn0w coming ?
    http://www.hotlink24h.com/2010/11/ultrasn0w-1-1-2-for-05-14-02-new-clue/

btw, 'SSH' has nothing to do with it, but it is always handy to have it enabled afterwards, hehe

I saw a few ads online for software that says it can unlock all iphones for $30 do they work or are they bs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

its more than likely just ultrasnow and is dependant on baseband

Just scams. What they do is just repackage the free software from the dev team and charge for it. Never ever pay for an unlock or jailbreak!!

They say that they have an unlock for 4.1 now but when you go to buy it they will say something like "our developers are working very hard on the unlock and it will be sent to you as soon as it is ready"

ultrasn0w would be the best go., unfortunately it's been delayed due to delay of the original iOS by Apple. Some Wifi connectivity issues on iPads were found so new release date for 4.2 sometime around 24th Nov, so expect new ultrasn0w about 2-3 days after that. Just run Cydia on jailbroken phone (make sure you have added source repo, repo666.ultrasn0w.com) and search for Ultrasn0w. If you find a version newer than 1.1-1 give it a try. It would work for all 3G, 3Gs and 'some' iPhone4. If you're not lucky try after few weeks.
