I'm going to add a graphics card to my pc and use it as a htpc, what's the best ones to go for that have hdmi.
I will never use it for gaming. and it would have to be pci express.

I think you will want a 5xxx series card as it will do both PCM multichannel over HDMI (decoded from HD audio via the player software) and HD audio bitstreamed over HDMI (for your amp to decode). Whereas the 4xxx series cards will just do PCM multichannel and can't bitstream.

Could you explain that a bit simpler please? Are all graphics cards 5xxx or 4xxx or is that a model for one manufacturer?
Also if i am using my pc as a htpc feeding the tv as a second monitor and someone else was using the computer to play say flash games, would i hear their sound on my television as well as the sound for the video i would be watching?

I did start an earlier thread on this very subject but happy to repeat myself.

I have a HTPC for HD satellite TV and Blu-ray/DVD watching.

No gaming. I use an ATI Radeon 4300 card, this has onboard HDMI. I was using the integrated graphics with HDMI on my HD 3200 motherboard but the graphics card does make a real difference.

You'll want a Radeon HD5450 at a minimum if you are going to be watching live TV (interlaced content).

The HD5450 is just about powerful enough for Vector Adaptive de-interlacing (the best kind of interlacing you get on a PC)

Depending on where you buy it, it will be anywhere from €35 - €60.

Also if i am using my pc as a htpc feeding the tv as a second monitor and someone else was using the computer to play say flash games, would i hear their sound on my television as well as the sound for the video i would be watching?

Yes. The sound (from all programs running on the computer) will either be coming out of the TV (via HDMI) or the PC speakers (via 3.5mm audio jack).
