    Hi guys,

The 177bhp 520d with the 136g/km emissions was released on 07, and ive noticed that your can get them relatively cheaply in the UK. can you pay your motor tax based on emissions for a 2007 car if the emissions are low?

    Thanks

No. It's cc based for 2007 cars.

No, only the VRT is on CO2(all VRT is on CO2 for imports these days), and baby Jesus crys every time someone buys a 5 series with a four cylinder engine, a proper BMW has a six cylinder engine:)!

    +1
€614 annually motor tax im afraid. wait 6 months and keep saving, then you may be able to stretch to the 2008 version. but beware the increased VRT costs etc

The difference is €450pa, which is not that much. I'd buy a well-priced 2007 here and prifit from the Irish fixation on motor tax to the exclusion of all else.

You'd probably be able to find a 6 cylinder 5 series on a 08 plate for not a lot more than an 07 520d given the Irish fixation about buying cars with the smallest(and worst) possible engine for a given model range. Tax for a 08 525d/530d is practically the same as it is for a 07 520d(~€15 difference I think).

    I don't think so, and here's why:

OP, don't be so concerned about CO2s or paying the extra tax, if you stretch to it go for the M5 instead. Now that has a proper engine!

The reason I am looking at the 520d is because of the relatively high power (i have a 1.6 corolla ATM!) and decent economy in a big car.. If I could afford to run an M5 or a 530i I wouldnt bother with the diesel!

I like the look of the m sport version and they seem to be fairly reliable.Plus my mate has a 2L TDi S-Line A6 so I'd like to have something as nice as it! :D

OP if you are buying a 5 Series then make sure it is the auto version. Manuals are not as nice to drive and not as in demand come selling time.

The auto is €302 to tax on a 08 reg but still costs €614 on 07 or older so the gap on motor tax between a 07 and 08 is just over €300 pa. Given the fixation people have with getting the lower tax models in Ireland you will probably save a few thousand euro on the purchase price of a 07 here over a 08 which will more than offset the extra motor tax.

What he said. A car like this should be auto.

words never allowed in the same sentence, your mate also needs a propper engine , and your 1.6 corolla probably has about the same power/weight ratio as a 520d , buy a 530d atleast, a propper diesel :D
