Has anyone on here ever exported a car to Australia before?

The car im thinking of sending is a classic 85 Mercedes.

Does anyone have any advice on what they did, what taxes/fees etc are associated with it? What shipping company did you use?

    Cheers smile.gif

A friend of mine did it when he was emigrating and couldn't sell his Boxster S here. It wasn't easy really. The car takes took 6-8wks to get to him down there. He had to pay inport duties into Oz. His company paid the shipping for him though. When it arrived the steering rack was leaking and both rear tyres had been flat for long enough to damage them. He had to pay for the car to be cleaned at customs. Then he had to pay road tax and registration. In fairness his tax went from 1600quid here to $160 there.

When he went to sell it he found it difficult to sell because the car had travelled from uk to here and then to Oz so buyers were suspect even though his car had small mileage compared to similar cars there. In saying that they love german performance cars down there, especially M-cars.

Thanks for your imput Ferris. I have a pretty rare car that is worth alot more in oz than it is here (nothing is worth anything here anymore!)

I wouldnt bring it to sell on. The car is like a baby to me and I dont think id be able to leave it behind if I emigrated. :(

May have been close to €160 for the rego a year back when the Euro was strong, but Rego on a Boxster is at least $350 - the compulsory TP insurance on it would be at least $750. So thats $1100 to get it on the road - which is around €800 at current rates. As an import, it will also be difficult to insure - so it'll be loaded on the TPFT/Comp insurance as well.

You need to pay a shed load of fees to get the car in - including GST (VAT) based on the value of the car in Australia + shipping, and duty. It also needs to be conformed to Australian standards. My M3 would have cost between $12k and $15k to bring in, so I left it at home - worth €16k at home, worth $60 in Sydney.

Euro cars cost a feckin fortune to maintain here - you will end up having to buy most of your parts from Europe, and the shipping is naturally huge on any bigger parts. I'd put it into storage!

Edit - think the rego actually comes in at $250! Just read this instead! http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=139&t=526846&mid=0&i=0&nmt=Importing%20a%20car%20to%20Australia%20-%20All%20the%20facts...%20Hopefully!&mid=0

As an FYI - this place is shockingly expensive, especially for motorists! One 30 minute drive last week took me through 5 tolls.

I was wondering what you did with the M3 & e30, glad you could hang onto them. I thought you could bring one car with you tax free like a Uk resident switching to Ireland, obviously not.
Interesting to read about the insurance implocations for imports & euro maintenance costs following the evolution of your 330i over on www.bmw-driver.net
