From my 15 years of coaching experience peopl get bored with them after a few month to be honest. Some do use them regurlay the only problem is just does not replicate the real running pattern and the use of muscles such as your glutes will do very little work compare to real running.

Nothing wrong to run outside...... don't don't this to your body, you are not a robot, the machine is :D

I've mine for nearly a year and have used it 59 times - the OH has probably used it 20.
So on average once per week and hardly at all from March to Sept.
Main benefits were during the snow, recovery runs when I'm busy (I can hop on the treadie, run for 40mins, check some email, have a shower, get back to work) and getting some early morning runs in at an easy pace (it's easier to throw on shorts and T and run 5mins after waking up - than dress up for a cold morning).
So it's cost me €10 per run so far, so unless you can see yourself using it for at least once per week for 5yrs - think twice, but I'm happy to have there as back up not replacement.

Previous posters are giving good advice.

I'd rather gouge my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon than treadmill train.

However, if you honestly think you'll use it then I'd advise hiring one if possible. That way you can see if you honestly will use it on an on-going basis rather than having it turn into the most expensive clothes horse in the world (as has happened to three friends of mine).

I've had my treadmill a year and a half now and it's used anywhere between 3-6 times per week between the two of us. At the minute a lot of my "easy" runs are on the treadmill. Otherwise I'd have to wait til my OH gets home and run back and forward on the only half mile stretch of concrete that is lit around here. So from my perspective it was a good investment.
