Three bad signal

I just got an iPhone 4 from Three, turns out the maximum I can get on my phone is 3 bars in a few spots (not always, signal can disappear in those spots as well). Just about half of my apartment, including the bedroom has no signal.
Of course, when I take the phone in my hand the bars drop.
I am just upgrading the software (I am sure this is the 1st thing they'll ask me).

Has anyone actually returned the phone on the basis of bad signal coverage? They told me I have 2 weeks for that, not sure if that's true or it was just a sales pitch…

Firmware upgraded. Phone in hand -> no signal. There are places in the apartment where I get 3 bars.

Are you left-handed? There's an issue with the iPhone 4's reception when held with your palm covering the bottom left of the phone, Apple issued free "bumpers" to owners but that might be finished now.

The bumper, which goes around the edge of the phone, stops the metal surround of the phone, which acts as an aerial, from being obstructed by your hand.

I was aware of the iPhone natenna issues, but I get one bar here with phone on my desk. When I take it in my hand it goes to "Searching".

Has anybody gone with the process of canceling contract with 3 due to bad reception?

Yes, not with an iphone, but I have. I had to jump through some hoops... deal with the 'customer service', change sim, phone repair once, phone replacement once... but eventually, I was released from contract.

Thanks Quackles. Were you transferring your number? Were there any problems with that?

I cannot make calls from home and when using it in my backyard it is breaking up - and that's holding the phone with care not to short the antennas.
